May I ask what your Josh/Neku headcanon is like?

<3 Eri/Shiki. And... okay. I have to ask about that threesome.

Hmmm, I don't want to get TL;DR here (BUT IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR ME NOT TO, JUST A WARNING)... Mostly I don't get how fandom usually starts out with LUV~ or OMG THEY'RE SO INTO EACH OTHER~ and a lot of fandom's interpretations of Joshua irk me. (Not to mention the interpretations of Neku-as-blushing-wanting-it-uke-to-Joshua.) Joshua, in canon, is a manipulative bastard, but people tend to forget that while he was fucked up in his methods and thoughts and went about it in way the wrong way, and he did think Shibuya was too sick and messed up to be worth saving, he also was planning on destroying Shibuya from the start to keep what was so wrong with it from spreading to the rest of the UG. And even then, ALL of his manipulations once he started his own Game with Kitaniji were geared toward saving Shibuya... in his own twisted, fucked-up way.

I don't know why I started with a TL;DR about Joshua. ;; Mostly, I just see Joshua not wanting to leave alone someone who's as interesting as Neku is. Joshua has no idea how to have friends or relationships, and I wouldn't say that he's especially interested in having either, though I can easily see him approaching a sexual attraction with more ease while not having the slightest clue how to practically apply emotions to it. :| By the end of canon, though, he obviously does regret something, maybe just being seperated from Neku (who is probably the closest thing to a "friend" he has, besides Hanekoma, who I think would be on a different level than a simple friend/family/whatever bond) or from seeing what Neku has and how much he's changed because of it.

For the most part, when it comes to Joshua's part of the pairing, I see him being a lot more complex than people make him out to be -- or that people just tend to paint him in extremes. He's not a rapist with "oh woe deep down I like you~" qualities, and he's not really going to approach it with an attitude anywhere NEAR "you are precious to me" -- even if it were true, I don't think he'd ever be able to say it. ... I think when it comes down to it, I see Joshua as having emotions, just being even more severely emotionally retarded than Neku was at the beginning of the game.

For Neku's part... I don't wanna get into the kind of length with him as I did with Jesus Kiryuu :||||| but suffice to say that... I see him in fic as being either too much like he is at the very beginnings of the game, or being too much like a Stereotypical Doujinshi Uke. By the end of the game, he obviously has mixed feelings about Joshua. The whole "I don't forgive you yet, but I trust you" thing. He has a real desire to connect with Joshua as a friend, now, though I'm sure he also wants to get in a good yell-rant before letting go of the shit he did. :I So I doubt he'd go the "OH GOD WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE, GO AWAY YOU ONLY CAUSE TROUBLE" route while Joshua giggles and flirts and molests him, but I also don't see him pulling the omgwhatisthisfeeling~~~ thing either.

I see them as being a severely dysfunctional friendship wherein one of them doesn't know how the crap a friendship works or why the details of it are important, and they're both perfectly willing to be sarcastic at each other until they're derailed onto another topic. (Or, in Joshua's case, all the time.) Pairing-wise, it'd pretty much be that, plus Joshua being attracted to Neku and not seeing the big deal Neku makes over it, but being amused by it. And I gotta say, I've got a weak spot for relationships in which two people who don't seem like they'd be close are closer to each other than anyone else (and while Neku and Shiki are totally close, I always got the impression that he connected with Joshua more/they got each other more, even with all of the SURPRAIS!es Joshua managed to ninja on him). I like the idea of them never really going ~OMG I LOVE YOU~, but instead just realizing that they are close, that they've got something they really do like, and if that includes a "relationship" and kissing and sex too, if they like it, it's cool for them. (Any affection that may or may not develop after all this initial crap is optional, but it would at least be more in-character for them to DEVELOP into being affectionate, rather than shoving it in right at or near the beginning.)

RE: THREESOME! Haha, mostly that stemmed from me reading one of the fics on the TWEWY comm because it wasn't purely Joshua/Neku (I think it also had Konishi/Minamimoto) -- the AU one where "Players" were auctioned off to be owned by those higher up in society? I wasn't sure what they were doing with the Joshua/Neku parts, but I gotta admit that from what I remember, it was beautifully written. Anyway, there was a bit of Uzuki+Eri+Shiki in there that was definitely... I wouldn't say romantic but it wasn't outright sexual? Kinda messed-up flirty. And it caught my interest.

And yes, Eri/Shiki = ♥♥♥ Heck, Neku/Shiki/Eri too. c: I am so easy and ship a lot in most of my fandoms.

Yes, it's definitely a more complicated, nuanced relationship than most fanficcers are really capable of getting into. In large part, I think, because, as you said, Joshua is so insanely difficult to parse on his own, let alone as part of a pairing. I felt like I was just starting to understand him at the end of his week... and then the BIG TWEEST, and I'm thrown for a loop again. At first I was extremely miffed because I thought I'd have to throw out everything I thought I understood... and then I replayed it and read a few fanfics, and realized that my initial read of him might work as what he was like before he died and became the Composer, and for the purposes of trying to blend in he was doing a reprise of it.

And I definitely want a link to that slave fic. Which is not a sentence I ever thought I would see myself type, but there you go.

... ALSO, RAPIST!JOSHUA BAFFLES ME. I don't even know why but he never struck me as the type to downright MOLEST (though slight inappropriate touching just to freak out, yeah definitely). And when it comes down to it, unless he was using his Composer powers anyway, GODDAMN THE KID IS A TWIG NEKU COULD PUT HIM ON HIS ASS. Shiki could put him on his ass. I would say that Rhyme might be able to put him on his ass but there may be a debate in there somewhere.
