As a writer I was never tempted to multiship, as I have a clear preference. As a reader I might have a fandom bicycle if fic is good.

It seems like people who multiship are less obsessed with their ships and emotionally removed, and in that sense are less of a fan. Doesn't mean that they're bad writers or that their shipping is false.

I make exceptions for the few canon love interests that I like. I ship Vimes/Vetinari but I also like Vimes/Sybil.

less of a fan? really?

(Anonymous) 2020-07-19 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Your 'exceptions' make you less passionate and therefore less of a fan.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-20 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, I'm more of a fan...of a single character. I think EVERYONE should love them.

Emotionally removed? Less of a fan?

Could you be anymore sanctimonious?

(Anonymous) 2020-07-19 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
No exceptions. It's OTPs all the way down or you're just a poser, you poser.

This is so fucking hilarious omfg.

"You can't just ship a character with more than one character! That's like being a super slut, but in a fandom way!"

I'm in interested in your definition of "fan". Do you think someone NEEDS to be passionately into one ship to be a fan? What about people who multiship all over the place but are passionate about their fandom to the extent that they do cosplay, buy merch, go to conventions, et cetera? It seems to me that your definition is very one-dimensional.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-20 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
It's not a bad thing! Having more to read, to enjoy is great. But I do feel that they're not true shipers. You know how you could be true goth in the 00s? You need to go deep to be a true shiper.

I went to conventions and I draw a clear line between people who are fans of a franchise and shippers, of being obsessed with canon or creating fanon.

no true scotsman shipper would ever (gasp) multiship!

do you also think that if you don't know every single fact about superman you're not a true superman fan? cause that's what you sound like rn

(Anonymous) 2020-07-20 12:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man this opens such an awesome door.

"YOU'RE NOT A REAL FAN IF YOU'RE NOT A SHIPPER."

Could you imagine screaming this at the gatekeeping nerd boys who reject fangirls. Oh my god. Their heads would pop right off! The audacity!

I'm doing this. It's 100% officially happening.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-20 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
"No multishipping except for the ones I personally like."

(Anonymous) 2020-07-20 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's what I prsonally feel on the subject. I didn't say that multishipping is bad or worse than single-shipping tho.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-20 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
But you did say it makes them less of a fan. Of what, though?

(Anonymous) 2020-07-20 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, I don't define being a fan of something by how obsessed I am with one tiny ship in the world of that work, but whatever

(Anonymous) 2020-07-20 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
I think there probably is a strong correlation between mono-shipping and obsession. The majority of people who mono-ship are probably a lot more obsessive about their ship, long-term, than the majority of people who multi-ship.

I don't think that makes them more of a fan though.

For instance, I mono-ship in the MCU, and I freely admit I'm LESS of an MCU fan specifically because I only low-level care about everyone who isn't my ship. I like most of the characters, but it's a casual appreciation. Whereas I'm passionately, wildly obsessed with my OTP. Does it make me a bigger fan of my OTP specifically? IDK, maybe. Depends on how you define "bigger fan." But does it make me less of a fan of the MCU as a whole than some other fans who multi-ship all over the place? I'd say so, yes.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-20 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm basically the same. I always walk away with an OTP. In fact, when I do want to ship with other characters, I just end up going in for the polyamory shit. (Now that I think about it, I think I *prefer* the polyamorous shit...)

And yeah, anyone outside of my OTP is... fine. I may love them in the show or podcast, but at the end of the day I have zero interest in fic about them. Which is pretty telling given that that's where I'm spending most of my time.
