Because not everything is about a happily ever after. There are AUs and the multiverse. There are dark ships. There is just pure one-shot smut with random pairings. There are threesomes and moresomes. There are past relationships of characters.

There is so much to explore in fiction. Sure I have some OTPs. I also multiship. The idea that OTPing is the only option is completely ludicrous.

I wtfed at this when it was first posted and whaddaya know, still wtfing over here, even though all my favorite ships are OTPs.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-19 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
As a writer I was never tempted to multiship, as I have a clear preference. As a reader I might have a fandom bicycle if fic is good.

It seems like people who multiship are less obsessed with their ships and emotionally removed, and in that sense are less of a fan. Doesn't mean that they're bad writers or that their shipping is false.

I make exceptions for the few canon love interests that I like. I ship Vimes/Vetinari but I also like Vimes/Sybil.

The more ships I support, the larger the pool of fanworks I can pick from, which means that my lake of fanworks will last a significantly longer period than your singular fandom puddle.

Stay mad about it.

I call myself a writer with an imagination.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-19 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
An imagination that extends to putting my favorite characters with any other characters that I think they would have interesting dynamics with. I guess I try to see the characters I write as individuals who aren't just part of a couple, but ones that, like people, have different facets to explore and are affected by and often changed by their experiences. Also, I believe you can fall in love with and be in love with more that one person (either serially or simultaneously).

But you must hate television show writers because most characters I can think of have more than one relationship.

But why does someone need to ship something to write it well? All they have to do is understand the characters well enough and come up with a good story.

Fandom is a banquet, and I don't plan on starving.

I definitely have my ships, but sometimes I tire of one, want to have another -- but I always come back later. To all of them . In all my fandoms. It just depends on my mood. I don't always want to have mac 'n' cheese for dinner, sometimes I want sushi. Sometimes I want tacos.

Also, I don't understand "break up your ship" -- Nah. That ship stays in tact. Now I just go write another fic about another dynamic I like featuring one of the persons in question. They don't have to break up. Or be ruined. It's that easy!

I think multishippers are the only ones who can be trusted to write fics of my ships. OTP-ers are too biased.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-20 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
fandom really gave everyone brain rot

(Anonymous) 2020-07-20 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a hardcore serial monogamist when it comes to my OTPs. I only ever have one OTP at a time, and I've only had six OTPs in nineteen years of doing fandom. And honestly, I think I understand how you feel, OP.

I disagree with you, though. I've read plenty of good fics by multi-shippers. And being a shipper doesn't necessarily mean you want two characters to get together in canon. For a lot of people it just means you're interested in exploring a sexual/romantic relationship between the characters. That doesn't mean you can't also be interested in exploring a sexual/romantic relationship between one of those characters and a third character.

I'm playing devil's advocate here, because as I said, I'm a HUGE mono-shipper myself. But your secret is just so OTT and judgmental that I really can't agree with it, even though multi-shipping holds zero appeal for me.

I'm kind of all over the place when it comes to shipping. Sometimes it's all about A/B from beginning to end and it never changes.

Other times I might start out shipping A/B, then realize I actually like B/C's chemistry/dynamic bettter and end up shipping them hard and never go back.

Sometimes I might go back and forth between A/B and B/C depending on what happens in canon.

Other times I might halfheartedly ship A/B and think it's cute enough but not be super invested, and it's only because C hasn't shown up yet or I haven't really seen B/C interact yet (because it hasn't happened, or I'm not all caught up with canon yet), but once I do, I'm super into them and never waver.

There's even one instance where I watched a remake first, liked A/B, then shifted to B/C, but by the end I couldn't stand either and the only pairing I even kind of liked was A/D, but then I watched the original version and I was all about A/B throughout and never changed my mind.

There's another example where I was all about A/B until I happened to read a fic that was good enough to convince me that B/C actually made more sense, and although that only lasted like, a week, and I went back to preferring A/B, in the back of my mind I was still okay with the concept of B/C (and would've much preferred it to how the series actually ended, but that's an entirely different story).

Then there's one where A/B are canon but the writing for the relationship is a disaster and in theory I like B/C better because I think the writing for that relationship is better, but the A/B actors are just so great together it's really hard not to like them.

My point is, there's no one right way to be a shipper, and you're an idiot.
