Maybe try some Barbara Hambly books? (I'm just listening to a new audio of Time of the Dark so the writer's on my mind.)

You've got genres ranging through Portal Fantasy, Vampires, Dragons, Historical New Orleans, Bizarre Star Trek/Wild West Crossover, I mentioned Dragons, right?

Characters tend to be v. competent while also three-dimensional with realistic flaws, and I like her romance sub-plots a lot.

I'll check her out! I remember reading her Star Wars books when I was probably about 11 and not liking them very much, which is probably why I haven't read her up to now, but that doesn't really mean anything, since I was 11 and they were Star Wars books.
