I am looking for things with fandoms with good M/F ships. Books (not genre romance or YA), movies or TV preferably. Ideally both characters should be likable and competent. And the male character should not be a Dark Prince Bad Boy Fucklord type of thing.

not to be a liberal and also instantly date myself as an absolute Old Person but I still get so into Josh and Donna from The West Wing it's honestly embarrassing

Oh, I do like them! They are a good couple. But I've seen West Wing years ago (and have complicated feelings about the writing at this point).

Maybe try some Barbara Hambly books? (I'm just listening to a new audio of Time of the Dark so the writer's on my mind.)

You've got genres ranging through Portal Fantasy, Vampires, Dragons, Historical New Orleans, Bizarre Star Trek/Wild West Crossover, I mentioned Dragons, right?

Characters tend to be v. competent while also three-dimensional with realistic flaws, and I like her romance sub-plots a lot.

I'll check her out! I remember reading her Star Wars books when I was probably about 11 and not liking them very much, which is probably why I haven't read her up to now, but that doesn't really mean anything, since I was 11 and they were Star Wars books.

Hmmm. Trying to think of things with a still active fandom since most of the things I like with good M/F ships don't have that active a fandom. Like, Legend of the Seeker was great and had a great M/F ship (as well as other ships), but the fandom isn't very active anymore. Same with Babylon 5. Great M/F ships, but only slightly active fandom.

Tolkien fandom is decently active. And although there is lots of slash in the fandom, canon het pairings are shipped too. Aragorn/Arwen has more fics written, but Eowyn/Faramir gets more actively talked about in the fandom, at least on Tumblr.

Rick Riordan's stuff seems to have a lot of fics on AO3, and the second most written pairing is a het one (Anabelle/Percy). Haven't read them myself, so I can't say how active the fandom is. But might be worth a try.

The Magicians has het pairings in either the tv or book version.

Thanks for the recommendations! I should definitely check out Eowyn/Faramir stuff, I always did love them as characters.

somewhat OT but " Dark Prince Bad Boy Fucklord" had me giggling

LOL, same. I'd read that parody in a heartbeat!

the fandom isn't the biggest, but rick/evie from the mummy are wonderful, it is action/romance though but the movie firmly centers on the main plot while rick/evie dance around one another during it. but they're one of my top fictional couples ever because of how great they are, both as a pair and as individuals.

Hmmm, maybe Vorkosigan saga, Miles/Ekaterin? Though Miles and any of his exes would work great, they were all good characters.

I mean, I basically have to rec Scully/Mulder. One of the biggest het ships out there, and it has some truly spectacular fanfic. That said, it's also pretty dated, obviously, and in some ways the fanfic can feel a little dated too. I LOVE TXF fanfic, but if you're used modern fandom, TXF fandom might be a bit of an acquired taste.

Both Scully and Mulder are very competent, but whether you find them both likable or not is down to the types of characters you like. Personally, I will love Scully always and forever, but Mulder can be a bit of a manchild sometimes. Canon Mulder was hit-or-miss for me, but fanfic Mulder is my boi.

I can try to give you some fic recs if you want. It's been a long time since I was in TXF fandom, but I should still be able to rec some solid stuff.

Not the OP, but I'd be totally here for some of your TXF recs.

How about The Avengers 1960's style. The non-superhero Avengers were the highest level secret agents in the UK. The greatest series of the show had two highly competent main characters with amazing chemistry. One of my favourite things about this series was that the female agent rescued her male partner equally as often as he came to her aid. Both characters are completely charming on their own and together they're outstanding. Here's a clip if you're interested
