Ice question

[personal profile] philstar22 2020-07-20 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I know the usual limit for ice for an injury is 15 minutes. Is there a limit for having ice on your head for a headache? Is there a risk of anything if I leave the ice on my head for several hours?

My hair is between the ice and my skin, so no direct skin contact.

AFAIK, the only real danger with icing pain is that the ice could do damage to your skin. If you keep the ice in a fairly insulated bag/cloth (think a sandwich bag or a hand towel) and have your hair as a further buffer, I don't think it could cause any problems. Sorry you're headache-y today!

When you use an ice pack, pay attention to how your skin feels. The first stage of ice burn is known as frostnip, which causes your skin to get red or pale with a tingling and prickly sensation. It’s a sign that you should remove the ice pack and warm the area so that you don't damage your skin.

Games rec for a Playstation 4

(Anonymous) 2020-07-20 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm getting a second-hand playstation 4 (never owned any kind of gaming station before and only ever played them at friends houses in the past), and I've already got the Kingdom Hearts games so far when it arrives. The only thing is I'm a little lost on what else to get so any recs would be welcomed!

my brother was able to get GTA 5 for pretty cheap for a ps4 and has been playing non-stop. I'm getting a lot of updates about it lol. from my understanding it's a really expansive, meandering game, so you can spend a whole day on a weird side adventure and really get immersed.

Well it depends of what types of games you like. Like do you like shooters, adventures, plot driven? Or even which games have you played that interested you the most?

My favourites are:
Uncharted, (full series available on PS4- 'The Nathan Drake Collection' 1-3rd game, 'A Thieves End' 4th game, and a shorter spinoff 'The Lost Legacy' set after the final (4th) game.)

Dishonoured (full series available on PS4- 'The Definitive Edition' 1st game, 'Dishonoured 2', and again another spinoff type game 'Death of the Outsider' set after the second game.)

Tales of Vesperia (part of the Tales series, but like most Tales games, is stand alone)
I think you'd like this one in particular since I think it's somewhat similar stylistically to KH.

Yakuza (full series available on PS4, (which I actually just found out about while writing this) It's an older game that's still being made, they're remastering the old titles to update and remove a lot of the censors put on them when first translated. Added Yakuza 0 a prequel sort of, I'd recommend playing this game as it's one of my favourites, regardless) Uhh, here's a link because I'm terrible at explaining things:
https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2020/03/guide_which_yakuza_games_to_play_and_where_to_start

Until Dawn (Single Game, No Pre/Sequels, horror/choice game)

Vampyr (Single Game, No Pre/Sequels, interesting concept but )

Detroit: Become Human (Single Game, No Pre/Sequels, idk I like it, but a lot of people don't)

Uhh, and a lot more? Look up the games if you want to see what interests you, I'd not recommend looking for spoilers unless that sort of thing doesn't bother you, since a lot of these are choice based games included here, and those with interesting twists.
I can sleuth out more if you want too if you'd like!

Seconding the Yakuza series.

My PS4 faves are Nier Automata and Dragon Quest XI. For remakes/ports, FFXII and Odin Sphere Leifthrasir. FFVII Remake is also FANTASTIC.

The Last of Us is one of my faves. So is God of War 2018. There are a lot of older playstation games in the playstation store. If you liked Kingdom Hearts I'd recommend trying any of the Final Fantasies. My personal favorite is 10.

I really, really love Final Fantasy XV. I think you can get that pretty cheap these days! Look for the Royal Edition since that'll have the character-specific dlc chapters.

If you want a new shiny that absolutely blows my face off with how incredibly gorgeous it is, get Ghost of Tsushima. Holy SHIT.

I am looking for things with fandoms with good M/F ships. Books (not genre romance or YA), movies or TV preferably. Ideally both characters should be likable and competent. And the male character should not be a Dark Prince Bad Boy Fucklord type of thing.

not to be a liberal and also instantly date myself as an absolute Old Person but I still get so into Josh and Donna from The West Wing it's honestly embarrassing

Maybe try some Barbara Hambly books? (I'm just listening to a new audio of Time of the Dark so the writer's on my mind.)

You've got genres ranging through Portal Fantasy, Vampires, Dragons, Historical New Orleans, Bizarre Star Trek/Wild West Crossover, I mentioned Dragons, right?

Characters tend to be v. competent while also three-dimensional with realistic flaws, and I like her romance sub-plots a lot.

Hmmm. Trying to think of things with a still active fandom since most of the things I like with good M/F ships don't have that active a fandom. Like, Legend of the Seeker was great and had a great M/F ship (as well as other ships), but the fandom isn't very active anymore. Same with Babylon 5. Great M/F ships, but only slightly active fandom.

Tolkien fandom is decently active. And although there is lots of slash in the fandom, canon het pairings are shipped too. Aragorn/Arwen has more fics written, but Eowyn/Faramir gets more actively talked about in the fandom, at least on Tumblr.

Rick Riordan's stuff seems to have a lot of fics on AO3, and the second most written pairing is a het one (Anabelle/Percy). Haven't read them myself, so I can't say how active the fandom is. But might be worth a try.

The Magicians has het pairings in either the tv or book version.

the fandom isn't the biggest, but rick/evie from the mummy are wonderful, it is action/romance though but the movie firmly centers on the main plot while rick/evie dance around one another during it. but they're one of my top fictional couples ever because of how great they are, both as a pair and as individuals.

Hmmm, maybe Vorkosigan saga, Miles/Ekaterin? Though Miles and any of his exes would work great, they were all good characters.

I mean, I basically have to rec Scully/Mulder. One of the biggest het ships out there, and it has some truly spectacular fanfic. That said, it's also pretty dated, obviously, and in some ways the fanfic can feel a little dated too. I LOVE TXF fanfic, but if you're used modern fandom, TXF fandom might be a bit of an acquired taste.

Both Scully and Mulder are very competent, but whether you find them both likable or not is down to the types of characters you like. Personally, I will love Scully always and forever, but Mulder can be a bit of a manchild sometimes. Canon Mulder was hit-or-miss for me, but fanfic Mulder is my boi.

I can try to give you some fic recs if you want. It's been a long time since I was in TXF fandom, but I should still be able to rec some solid stuff.

How about The Avengers 1960's style. The non-superhero Avengers were the highest level secret agents in the UK. The greatest series of the show had two highly competent main characters with amazing chemistry. One of my favourite things about this series was that the female agent rescued her male partner equally as often as he came to her aid. Both characters are completely charming on their own and together they're outstanding. Here's a clip if you're interested

Food

(Anonymous) 2020-07-21 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
I have no energy so I can't make a sandwich or cook
I don't think there's anything in the house that's just ready to eat
I don't trust myself to drive to the corner store because, as previously mentioned, I have no energy
I can't get UberEats because my family is like philosophically opposed to them and their v. shady business practices and they'd judge me

but

I haven't eaten anything today but 1/8th of a cantaloupe and 1 orange
Any suggestions?

Late, but the Dark Prince Bad Boy Fucklord

(Anonymous) 2020-07-21 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
because lmao

But also, which are your favorite het pairings with this sort of character? And I'm talking from the kind of romance novel you'd never let anyone (but me, right now, because now you're not alone)know that you read, to characters with this type of persona but then there's development. Books, movies, shows, manga, anime, the whole gamut.
