Re: How's your day been?

The nest the birds were building outside on an unfortunately tricky structure collapsed, and all four baby birds died. :(

I feel like a dick because I didn't try hard enough to shoo them away from building there, even though it was high up and I can't reach it without a ladder. Also, I can't stop thinking of the symbolism of it. Death, rebirth, lost souls... I hate having thoughts like that, because it implies their lives meant nothing, or were only a necessary "sacrifice" for the bigger picture, and that's just fucked up and insensitive.

Well, now I'm just rambling. After taking away the birds (I don't even want to say "cleaning up" because that just makes them sound like waste, like all the poop they left), I'll keep checking to make sure they don't rebuild there.

Oh, no, that's awful. Years ago my roommate's cat caught and killed an entire nest full of fledglings in one day, it was awful. This year the same kind of bird built a nest over my door, but I don't know if the fledglings survived their first day out; we have stray cats in the neighborhood and a bunch of hawks. But every time I see the same species in my yard I hope they fledged here.

I feel you. This happens at my house every few years or so: a dove tries to build a "nest" (dove nests are literally a dozen sticks piled on top of each other) in our wonderfully sheltered but steeply angled front door eaves, and every single egg they lay rolls off the eaves and smashes on the ground, and the doves will sit at the edge of the eaves and look down at the broken eggs, pitifully. Then there's finches that build on my busy patio and are so skittish they fly off every time anyone opens the back door, attracting attention from crows that inevitably discover the nest and eat the eggs/hatchlings.
