The fandom is so completely and uniformly accepting of the "fact" that HomuMado is canon or at least that Homura being in love with Madoka is canon that sometimes I forget that the first time I watched the show itself (as it was being released, so the fandom hadn't developed to the point it's at today) it didn't occur to me that the relationship was supposed to be seen as romantic. I saw much more subtext for romance with Kyouko and Sayaka than Homura and Madoka. But the fandom having been what it is for so long, even I forget sometimes that the latter isn't canon.

And I feel you on the shipping. I don't ship it either. Their actual onscreen interactions just don't lend themselves to anything shippy I can see.
