I still have issues with the ATLA ending even all these years later. So Aang had no problem with defeating and even killing or being responsible for the death of all the other villains and various mooks. He's certainly the cause of Zhao's death. But suddenly he can't kill Ozai? I mean, removing Ozai's bending and making him live was probably a worse punishment in the end. But it still bugs me that he was so hypocritical.

I completely agree.

There's a big difference between being responsible for deaths and killing someone right in front of you directly. I think it's pretty sanctimonious to act like there isn't. Yours is a pretty popular edgy adult opinion, though.

I actually don't think being possessed by an Ocean Spirit was in anyway controllable by Aang, and being possessed that way scared the living shit out of him. He was talking about killing under his own control of himself, which is why this discussion was also parallel to his mastery of the Avatar state, which he also couldn't control, and which he also scared his friends with.

Strictly speaking, assume that most people aren't dead. He wasn't responsible for anyone else but Zhao and associated Fire Nation soldier and not really even him or them.
