I feel like it improved a lot in style and tone as the show went on, but I didn't enjoy most of the earlier episodes when I watched them again. They'd have a couple of minutes of interesting plot and then a lot of Aang being Aang. Maybe they were necessary to show his growth but they weren't interesting.

It's one of the only shows I loved the addition of new characters on.

Yes, I think if you don't like Aang, the early episodes would be pretty unwatchable. He's very front and center early on. It becomes more of an ensemble show later on, but early on he's very much the star. I happen to love Aang, so I'm fine with the early episodes. But I can see how someone who finds Aang annoying or doesn't like him wouldn't like the first season as much.
