Were you also guilty of lying about your age so you could read explicit fic? Because for ~the children~ to be able to read the fic, they have to have clicked on the "yes, I'm a grown up who can be trusted to curate my own experience" button, which is their own responsibility.

This is an important part: not always. Sure, AO3 has this kind of system and all, but back then all we had was FF.net, which I didn't browse much because my English skills were pretty lacking, and self-published fanfic in forums and fansites, not always appropriately tagged OR tagged with fetishistic terminology I didn't know yet. Were there any horrible scars, am I mad about it? No, not really. But now, as an adult, personally I like when my fandoms (particularly those that have many children in it) are a bit more "family-friendly" in a "if you want that kind of stuff you know where to get it, if you don't enjoy browsing popular websites!" way. Again, that's just IMHO.
