I think I agree with this? I don't know if it's bleak stories I'm not into, per se. I think for me it's, like, deeply cynical stories I don't like. Which is very similar to bleak, but not quite the same thing, imo?

Bleak is more about circumstances, I think? Like, no matter what the characters do, the circumstances are still going to be grim. I can handle that.

Whereas cynical is more about the way the narrative sees people? Like, no matter what happens, people will always find a way to fuck it up for themselves and each other because people are more susceptible to their bad impulses than to their good ones. That's the type of thing I'm not down for.

However, to get back to your secret, I think cynical and bleak often go hand-in-hand, and in both the case of cynical and bleak, I think very few writers manage to tell dark stories that aren't also cynical and/or bleak. And it sucks, IMO, because man I LOVE dark fiction so damn much.
