But that's the thing. They can filter that stuff out of their search so that they don't see the offensive stuff. Is it a perfect solution? No, because newer stories not properly tagged could potentially be seen before they have to adjust the filters. But I think that's pretty fair for a large public site.

Interestingly enough, I haven't heard them objecting to the other explicit/mature fic in the fandom, just the ones involving adult/child. So "family friendly site" may not be the way to go in this case.

Yes but that's exactly what I was talking about: it's not about them not wanting to see it so much as them not thinking it would be nice, appropriate or desirable to have a certain "problematic" trope become commonplace in their fandom. Depending on the contents it might make not only children feel unsafe (which, as far as I can see ... you all don't really care about, even though these children will go on, say, Twitter to talk about fandom-related stuff and people there will mention the fic, because there isn't censorship like that on Twitter so they'll know it/want to read it anyway) but might also make adults feel uncomfortable about interacting with children in this fandom and so on. And... We know how it goes in fandom, you open a single window and the thing becomes a trend.

This I guess comes from a certain, personal understanding of fandom I have - I often come from small fandoms where everyone kinda knows everyone and everything that's going on, and there are often many children so I this is where I speak from.

Don't assume people don't care about children reading explicit fic. And don't assume it's the responsibility of the author posting the explicit fic to make sure other people's children are not reading it, especially when they are following the rules of the site they are at.

Nobody is forcing any kids to read the stories at this site. Also, this site isn't the only popular fic site to exist on the internet. People have choices. They can filter out the fic on the inclusive site, or they can go somewhere slightly more moderated in terms of explicit content (though as I said, even that might not be perfect, so you may need to create your own safe space).

Besides, the site in question was meant to be a safe space FOR explicit fic, which was banned elsewhere back in the day.

As problematic as the content is, I think this is veering into pearl-clutching territory. Which doesn't help anyone. As an adult, I don't have a problem interacting with the younger crowd in this fandom. I also have the sense not to discuss pornfic with anyone under 18. Or fans of any age for that matter. Of course, the series itself doesn't really give me porn vibes, so I have no interest in that anyway. But I'll still discuss plot points, favorite moments, characters, and other things with any fans.

The funny thing is, I've learned the writers of the explicit fic are fully aware of how their stories are perceived, and they actually have no problem with the tag that was meant to bury their fic. They've also made it clear that they would not approve of the behavior of the characters in their own stories in real life.

Not really assuming that though, personally, I'm not that worried about children reading explicit fic (because many "children" age 12, say, are having sex - I'm not dumb) ; I'm much more concerned about fics involving pedophilia becoming a thing in a fandom where there are children. Who have every single right of partaking in and enjoying fandom as well. This is the point where I think I'm not making myself clear: I'm not against the publishing of such material (it's some adults' kink? Fair, though I don't want to partake even though I'm adult so please think of me as well). I'm against it becoming popular on a website as large as AO3 or equivalent. Personally I don't really know any other popular fic websites aside from FF and AO3. (Sure, local ones, but still) And well, indeed - just like Twitter was meant for microblogging and not for furry porn artists but that's how it went since Tumblr banned porn lol.

Really not trying to judge anyone here or, as you put, do pearl-clutching. But again, this is all coming solely from my experience in fandom. I guess it would warrant a much longer discussion than what we can do here. But my point remains: I'm not speaking against the fic or its authors (if anything, I'm speaking against people who offended them gratuitously and publicly) but I'm not favourable to (people who make/) a trend out of pedophilia in my fandom with a sizeable amount of children either. But, again, I'm just guessing everything here because IDK the fandom.
