We need to switch social circles because I'm afraid to admit I like Hamilton now based on how many people I've seen bashing it. (I just unfollowed someone on Tumblr for describing it as "pro-Imperialist and pro-slavery propaganda.")

That's OTT. There is a way to talk about the musical being a bit tone deaf without going overboard with the performative bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-25 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
It's an OTT description but not really incorrect

+1

Yeah I mean... the only reason they got away with it for so long with so little criticism is likely because of the cast and crew being mostly POC and people weren't sure how to criticise them.

And here I always thought it was very deliberately crafted to be pro-black, pro-Hispanic, pro-immigrant propaganda.

(...I'm also pro-all-of-those, in case anyone was worried.)

(Anonymous) 2020-07-25 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah ymmv but i just thought it was... okay. certainly not anything so special that i understand why it engulfed the internet like it did.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-25 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I just saw it last week and had fun watching it, but have no urge to see it again. I get the same feeling from it as I did with Frozen, which is "That was okay, but I do not understand why it has taken over the entire world"

(Anonymous) 2020-07-26 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
god that drove me *nuts* with frozen. such a bland movie!

(Anonymous) 2020-07-25 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought it was okay as well. I can admire a lot of it intellectually, but it didn't engage me emotionally.

(I did enjoy Lafayette/Jefferson mightily, though. MIGHTILY.)

(Anonymous) 2020-07-25 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
thank you for saying so, secret person. I can never express my distaste for it (and echoing above anon' "how has this taken over the entire world??" sentiment) because I dislike musicals in general so I always get the "well you just hate musicals so you wouldn't be able to appreciate this one's genius" reaction if I even try to enter the conversation.

my roommate loves it and watched it while I was in the room, so yeah, I watched it. I genuinely don't understand the hype. It's not that good. The subject matter aside, it's...kind of dumb, actually. At least she was also disappointed because she was expecting there to be lines and a story in between the songs, and there wasn't, and she's like well if I'd known that I could have just listened to the cast album again for the millionth time and missed nothing.

also I don't understand why women were dancing in their underwear but the men got to wear their coats.

SecretOP here:

Yeah see, I LOVE musicals and I STILL don't get how it blew up so big? Like, there are so many better musicals out there!

(Anonymous) 2020-07-26 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
NAYT

I think it was the casting choice, not the actual show which caused the sensation.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-26 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
I saw it on stage last year (London production) and thought it was okay. Nothing spectacular. Lighting was awesome.

I'm hard of hearing and found a lot of the show difficult to follow so was looking forward to watching it on Disney with the subtitles.

Still found it a bit difficult to follow and Lin Manuel Miranda was a huge weak link. He can't sing, or not well enough to be a lead.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-26 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
I think that bothered me a lot too. Like it's not that he can't sing passably, but especially next to such strong technical singers his lack of technical ability really stood out to me.

Lots of friends keeping telling me I will love Hamilton, it I don’t like musicals. At all. Ever. Not even the Rocky Horror Picture Show. So I’ve been delighted with some of the ridiculous bad take reactions because now I can’t just say the politics behind it turn me off.

Can we be friends???

(Anonymous) 2020-07-26 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I dared to say that I found it "meh" also on my FB and was piled upon. I actually like a few songs, but I found it soooooo boring that my mind kept wandering and I would completely lose my place in what was going on in the story...

Yesss! I quite enjoyed the king's song but that is literally the only one that stuck in my mind.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-26 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
I liked Burr the most.

He's like the Patron Saint of Just Wanting to be Invited and The Fear of Missing Out.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-26 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
I got about 10 mins in and couldn't deal with it anymore. I usually love LLM, but not in this.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-26 08:09 am (UTC)(link)
I think the popularity of Hamilton is due to its kind of milquetoast rap/hip hop, with the sharp edges filed off to make it palatable to white (upper) middle class Americans. All of the people I know who are amped about it are amped about the music (since the purported message was already something they were well disposed towards), and they are all your typical "everything except rap and country" music fans.

But on the bright side, Hamilton gave us The Haunting of Lin Manuel Miranda:

The internet has def made musical dissent much more fraught, but I mean, if you like musicals, then it depends on what make a good musical to you. frankly, the musical framing is bar none. the motif recall is LOTR worthy. but the plot is shallow as hell, the characters only get by on actor charm, and like 1776 you kinda have to gaf about the subject in its framing (I have trouble with Oklahoma for the same reason). some of the songs are so blatantly inspired by better songs, that it diminishes their impact to me (I mean I NEVER replay any of the 10 Duel Commandments or the reprises because I can just, you know, listen to the 10 Crack Commandments by Biggie and hear the flow as its meant to be heard, lmao). and I actually love this musical.

I too am underwhelmed by this show. I like a lot of the music, but I've seen the live version and the recorded. It's ok. I have tickets for January again (part of a package) that I will be giving away. I don't need to see it again. Oh, and King George has all the best lines, lol
Edited 2020-07-26 12:03 (UTC)

watched it for the hype

(Anonymous) 2020-07-26 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
It was so blaaand, even the humour fell flat for me. Bless Jonathan Groff's spitty heart, I think I only ever exhaled air out of my nose at his "I'm so blue" and little grooving to Burr's song. I appreciate the set design and choreography on Satisfied. Other than that, ugh, what a slog. I wonder if part of why I found the story so boring is because I'm not American and could give two figs about the founding fathers.

My only real take away is that I praaay Book of Mormon gets released on a streaming service. I won the lottery to see it once and it's truly a hilarious and heartfelt experience.
