It's not just one mangaka.

> most people in Japanese fandom have a firm grip on the difference between fiction and reality

Which is why there's entire cars on trains JUST for female teenaged passengers so they don't get groped or worse on the way to school. Which is why Japan has such a huge sexual assault problem, ESPECIALLY of underaged girls.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2020-07-29 12:46 pm (UTC)(link)
America could use those train cars. Hell, lots of places could. Saying Japan is somehow so much worse is....not a great look for you, anon.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2020-07-29 01:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Saying Japan is somehow better is hardly a better look for you, anon.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2020-07-29 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol where did I say it was better? It's just not /worse/.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2020-07-29 01:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Multiple people in this comment chain repeatedly said that Japan is so much better.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2020-07-29 01:15 pm (UTC)(link)
They've said Japanese /fandom/ is better. And also, crazy thought, that there's multiple anons here with multiple opinions.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2020-07-29 01:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Newsflash: If you reply to a comment chain without identifying yourself as NA, people are going to assume that you're AYRT or in agreement with AYRT.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2020-07-29 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Cool, thanks for the tip, but can you point out who said Japan was better?

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2020-07-29 01:34 pm (UTC)(link)
The OP a few comments above yours.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2020-07-29 01:42 pm (UTC)(link)
"The thing is, most people in Japanese fandom have a firm grip on the difference between fiction and reality, which is part of the reason it's so popular there."

You mean this? Which then someone replied to with:

"Which is why there's entire cars on trains JUST for female teenaged passengers so they don't get groped or worse on the way to school. Which is why Japan has such a huge sexual assault problem, ESPECIALLY of underaged girls."

So it went "Japanese /fandom/ is better" to "Japan specifically has a huge rape problem because of fandom, obviously"

Do you see where the problem is here???

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2020-07-29 01:49 pm (UTC)(link)
If someone says "The US is a superior place for human rights" and someone else replies with "Which is why the BLM movement is having countrywide protests right now?" do you also read that as implying that racism doesn't exist outside the US?

NAYRT

(Anonymous) 2020-07-29 01:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Except it says JAPANESE FANDOM. Not "JAPAN". Derailing fandom conversation with something that is happening outside of fandom and directly implying that fandom is responsible for it is disingenuous and downright slimy.

A more apt comparison would be:

"American fandom seems to be able to separate fictional violence from real violence better than some others I've seen."

"Oh, is that why there was a big mass shooting at a country concert that killed over fifty people then?"

Re: NAYRT

(Anonymous) 2020-07-29 02:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree that they chose a poor example. That's stilla far cry from saying "Japan specifically has a huge rape problem because of fandom, obviously". But I also brought up fandom's treatment of female celebrities and it was still dismissed, even though it was very much a fandom-related issue.

Re: NAYRT

(Anonymous) 2020-07-29 02:13 pm (UTC)(link)
DA That's the connection the "Japan has train cars to stop rape from happening" anon made, though, which is the issue people are having with your defense.

OP

(Anonymous) 2020-07-29 12:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm gonna second the anon who replied to you. I'm done with this line of conversation. The idea that they have segregated train cars because Japan is this underage girl raping haven and Japanese men read a manga and just can't help themselves because they don't know the difference between fiction and reality is veering directly into "I don't know shit about Japan and my racism is showing" territory.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2020-07-29 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
If your argument is that Japan is better than everywhere else, you should be prepared to defend it.

OP

(Anonymous) 2020-07-29 01:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I never said Japan is better than everywhere else, I said Japanese fandom is better at separating reality from fiction. They don't have crazy-ass "antis" invading every questionable portrayal in fiction with handwringing about how the author or artist is such a bad person and normalizing Bad Things for drawing that guro/writing that non-con fic/enjoying that problematic ship and having the gall to like it.

But this idea that Japanese men are raping machines because of weird hentai is just...well it's a new one anon, I'll say that.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2020-07-29 01:39 pm (UTC)(link)
The lack of people going against the established social norms doesn't mean that Japanese are somehow better at separating reality from fiction. Japanese fandom is also known for forcing female celebrities to give a public apology once it's revealed that they dared to have a boyfriend.

OP

(Anonymous) 2020-07-29 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Japanese fandom is absolutely better at separating the two. Japanese fans don't dogpile people for enjoying problematic fiction and demand public groveling before they're allowed to enjoy it in peace for five minutes before another anti comes along and demands it again.

You also brought up a specifically IRL problem. None of that is fiction in the first place, that's all IRL cultural baggage and has nothing to do with fiction.

Japanese fandom isn't superior as a whole, I just said they're better at separating reality and fiction. They realize that someone like "le problematic ship" or "le weird guro art" doesn't mean someone is a pedo/sick serial killer IRL and they also realize that someone's gore pixiv isn't going to inspire a serial killer to go out and cook a young woman like a turkey while she "erotically dies" or whatever (it's a whole subgenre where folks are happy to die and get eaten, I don't get the guro thing at all but again, I'm not going to go tell them they're all sick freaks for enjoying something in fiction).

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2020-07-29 02:11 pm (UTC)(link)
You also brought up a specifically IRL problem.

It's a specifically fandom-related issue. It's not random Japanese people demanding public apologies for their favourite character's actress, it's fans doing this, because they are unable to tell that the actress is a real life person who has a life outside the performance.

Japanese fandom isn't superior as a whole, I just said they're better at separating reality and fiction.

Saying it repeatedly isn't going to make the Japanese fans creeping on voice actresses, artists, and singers disappear.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2020-07-29 01:43 pm (UTC)(link)
DA If your argument is "Japan is worse than everywhere else" you should be prepared to explain how that isn't racist as fuck.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2020-07-29 01:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Did someone say that? I must've missed it. I've only seen people replying to a person claiming Japan is superior by pointing out that Japan has flaws.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2020-07-29 02:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, seriously, what the fuck?

The OP said Japanese fandom is preferable and this person

https://fandomsecrets.dreamwidth.org/2253728.html?thread=1048801952#cmt1048801952

argued that Japan itself, as a whole, is full of rapists.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2020-07-29 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I said it above: Pointing out that the US has BLM protests in response to someone claiming that the US is superior to over countries when it comes to human rights is not akin to calling all of the US, and only the US, a country full of racists.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2020-07-29 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)
And as someone else pointed out, that's a stupid comparison.
