I know I get irritated much more easily. And I've been down and a lot less optimistic than I usually am. A train carrying hazardous materials derailed, caught on fire, and part of the over 100-year-old railway bridge collapsed not too far from where I live and instead of thinking it was awful, I thought it was better than I could have expected for this year because the chemicals didn't actually spill in the lake and no one was killed. While it's true that it could have been much worse, I would usually be surprised that something like that had happened, not surprised that it wasn't a complete disaster.

I liked them well enough (at least the first three) but never bonded hard, and am relieved. But so many kids, especially queer and trans young people, found their magic and voice through those books and I feel angry on their behalf.

The older I get, the more I feel like it's more about how the joke is set up and less about the topic itself. Most people will laugh at a rape joke, at least for half a second, if it's set up right. Yes, even though they wouldn't admit it. (They'll probably feel dirty for laughing at it, but it'll still get a laugh out of them.)
