My favorite types are Lovecraftian horror, scifi horror, and fantasy horror. My absolute favorite horror movie ever is Event Horizon. Other favorites are Alien, Halloween I and II (original only), Dagon, In the Mouth of Madness, Cabin in the Woods, Wicker Man (original), and Pan's Labrynth.

I love psychological horror. I especially love horror movies that take place in isolation. I also like ones where the characters can't trust themselves. Zombies are also great.

Some of my favorites: The Thing, Pontypool, Aliens, Get Out, Under the Shadow, Train to Busan, The Conjuring, 28 Days Later, The Ritual, and Pan's Labyrinth.

I like Cabin in the Woods, Pan's Labyrinth, Psycho, Rosemary's Baby, the original Wicker Man (NOT the Nic Cage garbage), Murder Party, Oculus, Misery, It Follows and probably some more I'm drawing a blank on.

I definitely prefer supernatural horror to, say, torture-based horror. And of course the psychological element is important. Some of my favorites are:

It Follows - Best ‘sleeper’ scare. Wasn’t that scary to watch, but stuck with me for months afterwards.

The Descent - All-around most horrifying. Somehow the interpersonal tensions between the characters, the mounting claustrophobia, and the more classical horror elements all come together and compound on each other to create a sense of suffocating horror that’s deeply existential and yet inescapably literal at the same time.

Rec. - If I had been able to watch this in Spanish, without the subtitles, I think it might’ve given The Descent a run for its money in terms of sheer horror-factor. As it is, it’s still probably the best found footage horror movie I’ve seen.

28 Days Later - Most beautiful horror movie.

Oculus - Utterly chilling and so underrated.

Pontypool - Weird and fascinating and unnerving. Marred, for me, by the last 1/5th, which could’ve been better, IMO.

Second tier:

Hereditary - THAT ONE SCENE THO.

The Ritual - Sort of the “all boys” version of The Descent. Not as good, but still a strong horror movie.

The Babadook

It (the recent one)

Good movies I don’t strictly consider “horror” even though they kind of are:

Let The Right One In
Alien/Aliens
Mama
Cold Skin

I tend to lean toward the paranormal. Slasher flicks and torture porn stuff are okay but overall don't really do it for me.

Re: Based on 8

(Anonymous) 2020-08-01 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
In my mind, I love horror movies, but every time I watch one I'm disappointed because I never find them scary. Especially supernatural/paranormal ones. I think I'm just too much of a skeptic because I'm always distracted by how ghosts/demons/whatever aren't real so CLEARLY this couldn't actually happen, and it just frustrates and annoys me.

So I guess I need to come terms with the fact that in reality I'm really NOT into horror movies, although I wish I could be. There have been a couple times where a horror thing (this has happened with books, movies, and TV) seemed like something supernatural was going on and then it looked towards the end like there was actually going to be a rational explanation for it all, and I was pleasantly surprised, but then at the last second it was like haha just kidding, it actually is supernatural after all.

I wish I could find things like that, but where it turned out there really WAS a logical explanation, but it's hard because knowing that ahead of time is inherently spoilery and I want to be pleasantly surprised lol.

Unavoidable SPOILERS for three different stories herein

I like some slashers, but there's only so much gore I can put up with. I like psychological horror and suspense thrillers, unless they are too confusing to me. I do not care for torture-porn.

My favorite overall movie is an action-horror one: Aliens.

I think Halloween (1978) is a really good horror movie, I liked the 1981 sequel and Halloween H20 (except for the last few minutes), and I have a lot of thoughts about the series*.

Other horror movies I really enjoy (a few of which are just stupid fun to watch and not necessarily what I would consider good):
An American Werewolf in London
Alien
Jaws
Silver Bullet
Red Dragon
Fright Night (1985)
Poltergeist (1982)
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors
Scream
Tremors
Happy Death Day
Zombieland
The Birds
The Faculty
Critters
Cube
Carrie
Happy Death Day 2U
Shaun of the Dead
The Thing from Another World
The Cabin in the Woods
Cujo
The Sixth Sense
The Blob (1988)
The Lost Boys
Gremlins
The Silence of the Lambs
Rosemary's Baby
28 Days Later
Lake Placid
Resident Evil
Final Destination 2
Final Destination 3-D
From Dusk Till Dawn
Jaws 2
The Craft
Blade Trinity
Underworld
Pet Sematary (1989)
Pitch Black
Tucker and Dale vs Evil

*I did not like Halloween III either as a sequel or a movie and only watched part of Halloween 4 before bailing, so I never tried 5 or The Curse of Michael Myers. And I thought Resurrection was a ridiculous idea. I thought there was no reason for the remakes and very annoyed that they couldn't name them or the continuation differently. I was very disappointed by Halloween (2018) - it was okay rather than bad, but I was expecting something good. I was okay with it just having the first movie in its continuity, until I saw it. I would have liked it to be a continuation from H20 (so both Halloween (1978) and Halloween II (1981) in the continuity too) with those last few minutes of H20 being a hallucination or dream, which would fit well in the movie. Then, John (Laurie's son) could have the daughter that's seventeen (though I didn't think much of Andi Matichak's performance, so probably a different actor there) and they're all kind of expecting Michael Myers to show up.

I like psychological horror and scary stuff, thrillers. Not a big fan of the gore. I don't watch scary movies often though. There are horror films that I just can't watch, like Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
In random order, my favorites are: Rosemary's Baby, Event Horizon, Alien, Halloween, The Exorcist, IT and IT: Chapter Two (the recent ones), Cabin In the Woods, In the Mouth Of Madness, Nightmare On Elm Street.

Weekend Plans?

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2020-07-31 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
What is everyone doing this weekend?

I am going to finish The Umbrella Academy (on episode 6 now). I am hopefully going to be done with the body of the monster I am crocheting as well. Also listening to the season finale of the NoSleep Podcast. There will be some Apex Legends in between all that.

I'm putting off TUA until I can watch it with my friend who's currently out of town, but I loved the first season and heard the second is even better. 🙌

Probably reading, mostly. I'm reading a really good book right now that I'm hoping I can finish tonight, and I've gotten a couple others recently that sound really interesting so I hope I can get to those soon too.

And I want to make homemade alfredo sauce at some point this weekend. I haven't made it in awhile, but was craving it the other day so I bought the ingredients a few days ago when I was at the grocery.

Might watch some TV but all my usual shows are on hiatus (and who knows if some of them will ever come back) and for whatever reason I'm finding it hard to get into new things (meaning older stuff I never watched, not that there's anything actually new right now, or at least not anything I'm interested in) so I don't know.

It's my birthday on the 3rd but due to Covid I can't really do much. My best friend and I are in the same bubble so we're having lunch together but the rest of my family is on the other side of my city and none of us drive and public transportation is kind of risky so... yeah.

I'm going to keep watching Trapped (it's an Icelandic murder mystery show on Netflix) and sleep a lot probably.

Phantom Fandoms

(Anonymous) 2020-07-31 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
A couple days ago we had a secret about rarepairs / "ghost ships," and one of the commenters said, "And sometimes it's not just the rarepairs, the entire fandom never sailed. :(" It made me wonder -- what's a piece of media you wanted fandom for but never found any online? (Or, you only ever found like 10 people talking about.) Any old books/shows/movies you wish got more love and think are ripe with fanfic or meta material?

Sort of based on 12

(Anonymous) 2020-08-01 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Seeing secrets lately based on shows whose target demographics tend to be kids (anywhere from 8 to 13?) has made me start to think -- how do children see these shows?

Fandom has their own preoccupations, expectations, and conversations -- including meta, which I guess would also include creator intent? regarding the show or movie in question. I remember as a kid, a show like Gargoyles was just the show -- or a movie like Iron Man was merely that. There wasn't necessarily an exploration of of the themes etc.

How did you perceive certain shows or movies as a kid and how do you think they would be perceived by fandom as you know it today? Or, if you have kids/babysit & those kids watch any shows, how do they perceive them?

The kids I babysat a longtime ago used to watch Adventure Time. They laughed, and I thought the character was a little asshole who would have gotten his mouth popped if he had been that rude to an adult when I was growing up. But then I sat and watched it with them and it was pretty good (Jake? Still rude). But I often wonder how much of this goes over the heads of kids that are 5 or 6 even 9 years old...
