The question is, why do people automatically assume he is white?

Although I get people who have seen the show to make a mistake, but if you have seen the show? Yeah, I don't think the idea that he is white holds much ground in that case.

Because he's not black, probably. No, seriously, they just see that and don't bother to think about an other possibility since it doesn't really matter to them what ethnic group he belongs to. I don't care much, either, he's just Aang.

Concerning the actor, as long as he's good and does resemble him a bit, I don't think it's important whether he's white, Asian or whatever.

No one is saying he is black though. The point is he shouldn't automatically be assumed to be white, particularly when his culture his not European, so yes it does kind of matter. To me because his culture is so inspired and analogous to traditions and culture in the Far East that it is more likely that he should be assumed to not be white. And for him to be white smacks of orientalism.

So I do think the responsibility should be on the casting directors to say why he should be white as opposed to what it seems now where people have to make the case that he shouldn't. The only reason I could see why, is because they are afraid that nonwhite leads will make them less money. Which is a pretty sorry state to be in.

Edit: I think that because of Aang's culture is what makes it important that he not be white.

It's not just his name. It's his clothes, his culture, what he eats, his spirituality, the language that he reads, the architecture of his people. He's AU Asian - Tibetan to be exact.

You said that people are obsessed with him being Asian because he's not white and he's not black. That's not it. If I live in a place where I eat hamburgers and french fries all the time, drive my car around, pay for things in dollars, measure things in feet or miles, or weigh them in ounces or pounds, then guess what, my culture is indicated as being American. And it's going to be outright strange if someone non-American is casted to play Me in the upcoming film, My Life!

Do you not understand? This is why they picked only actors from the UK to act in the Harry Potter movies. It is the same principle. It doesn't matter if Avatar is a different world or not, that world is extremely influenced by Asian and Inuit cultures. I've never even seen the show and I can tell that the Water Tribe is based (albeit loosely) off Inuit.

It's about way more than skin color or race, it's about culture and roots. My roots are all American, so to have someone playing Me in the film My Life who speaks with an absurdly British accent and refers to things by British names is just going to be completely out of place.

The characters aren't white, but that's honestly just the surface issue. The real issue is much, much deeper than that, and I don't think you're grasping it. Why is white considered the norm? If skin color and race is as unimportant as you (and others) imply it is, then why is television made up of mostly white (and male) actors? Why do they get the biggest roles in movies? If skin color and race isn't important, why are so many people considering this year a landmark because the US finally, finally grew the balls to elect a black man to the highest position in the nation?

Because it matters.

It's just a symptom. But it's part of a much greater disease, and sometimes you have to work at the littler things before you can work at the big one.
