I'm also a fan of Hetalia, and I see your points, but really, I think you should just stop. And maybe consider retracting some of the things you've said earlier instead. The secret has a point, even if it's not a particularly well-made point: those requests make the fandom look really bad. Everyone else is just trying to marginalize the damage by pointing out that the kink meme does not reflect upon the fandom as a whole, or even a majority, and it does not reflect upon the series at all because APH itself contains none of that. Attacking people outside is fandom is seriously unhelpful right now.

True enough points. I just get very, VERY tired of all the Hetalia hate, which almost all stems from "HISTORY IS SRS BZNESS!" ideals. And really, IMO, I don't see why people in the fandom need to care what that type of person thinks about us. Which is why I made the comment.

History isn't srsbzns, I agree. But people should probably at least understand the atrocities if they want the right to inoffensively retell them with black humour and not come off like a douchebag. It's like jokes about racial stereotypes: if a comedian actually knows what they're talking about re:various ethnic groups and uses that knowledge to lampoon ridiculous assumptions, it's funny. If it's just underscoring the stereotypes themselves, it's unoriginal and often offensive. The really glib way a lot of those requests are phrased gives off the impression that the requesters are pulling random historical conflicts they've heard of in passing and asking for that to be dramatised as porn. And the way you replied to the first response with "it's happened, it's over" and then justifying that with "I didn't see the screenshot" also kind of gives off the idea that you might not have thought about these events all that much either, which is probably why people are responding so hostilely.

Re: 136

...which is slightly absurd, since that's not the case at all, and is one of multiple ways to intrepret that comment. Like the way I actually meant it. Which was that it's not like you can go back and make the event never happen. Whereas I oppose humor about things like suicide, since that isn't over, can happen again, and is really sad no matter how you look at it.

And I wasn't justifying saying "It's over and can't be erased" with the comment that I missed the screenshot. The comment that I missed the screenshot, which I did, was there to explain why I'd gone into a rant about how The Rape of Nanking has nothing to do with Hetalia =/.

Which was that it's not like you can go back and make the event never happen.

Firstly, sorry if I misunderstood your comment. I think we're all a bit fired up over this issue and it's probably been bubbling away at everyone from all perspectives for a while now. Hence, the misunderstanding.

Also, I read into your responses a tone of defensiveness over why you'd gone into a rant about how Nanjing doesn't have to do with Hetalia. But putting it into the perspective of all these replies, I'm sorry if I came off sounding condescending in my admonishment. Although it's interesting that you said you were sick of the way the fandom's being victimised because by my interpretation, the first reply to you that copypasted the info about Nanjing might have been made with similar frustration and concern that fandom wasn't aware of the details it was depicting. (Not saying fandom isn't aware because a large number of them seem like history buffs but that probably people on different sides are feeling the same exasperation.)

That said, we'll have to disagree with our views on history. Yes, the events are over but monumental events in a nation's psyche must have lingering effects. And if someone's going to joke about them, make light of it, while not really making an effort to actually understand the event itself and put it in its context, then I don't think they can hide behind the excuse of it being something that can't be changed and expect it to hold. It does change, isn't over, in my opinion, in the minds of the continuing generations and the perspectives from which its viewed. Chinese occupation of Tibet continues to this day, chinese ill-feeling towards western countries for their lack of pursuit in holding Japanese forces truly accountable shows its influence again in the nation's rising tide of nationalism. And someone who sees the events of the the past as something static is dangerously close to making it into an object to be objectified. (Am I even talking about Hetalia any more, gah! Okay, linking it back...) Especially since it's started in a kink meme with the purpose of sexually satisfying the audience. And usually I would be okay with that in most fanfic, but IDK, maybe I shouldn't be.

Re: 136

[identity profile] maryohki.livejournal.com 2008-12-14 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, don't worry about it. I think everyone's just getting uppity over little to nothing, myself included.

My point is that Hetalia really doesn't try to make light of history in a disrespectful manner. Really, I see Hetalia as a fun way to learn about history for people that hate history class, and for the people that enjoy history in the first place to further immerse/amuse themselves. So I just don't think it deserves all this hate. Same with the fandom. Yes, there are idiots. But most Hetalia fans from what I've seen are intelligent and actually care about history, which is what led them to Hetalia.

Also, the secret pissed me off because it looked to me like it was saying OP assumed ALL APH fans are like the ones that post fucked up requests in the kink meme. That on top of so much Hetalia hate being out there finally made me snap.
