Yes, but no. TTW had ten times Twilight's quality of narrative, and the title of the book is part of the point; yes, it's amazingly fucked up and the 'romance' of the situation is debateable, but the point is that Claire IS rendered powerless by this situation, not because she's a woman ( or even because she was the woman of the relationship ) but because she's not the time traveler. If their roles had been swapped, I firmly believe the book would be called "The Time-Traveler's Husband". To me, at least, the book shouldn't be valued for its romance (mostly because it's just taken as such a given and not properly developed, IMO) but as a recount of Claire's tragedy it's poignant and striking.

So, I get what you're saying, but you're still wrong. <3

Seconded. The Time Traveler's Wife is aware that this situation is messed up and tragic, whereas Twilight is completely oblivious and thinks it's portraying the ultimate romance, and that's where the squick comes in.

We will have to agree to disagree then. I think Twilight is harmless fluff and doesn't try to be anything other than that. I think TTTW is total, pretentious, narcissistic crap that tries to pass itself off as literature.

I really dislike things that try to be what they're not.

And most of the TTW fans I know think it's OMG THE MOST ROMANTIC THING EVER. Which it isn't.

I reeeeeally doubt that, about the genderswap titles, since's Claire whole life seems invested in A Man.

.. except she's not. Claire cares massively about her work, her friends, her family - if anything, I thought Claire was incredibly well-rounded. Yes, she perhaps spends more time than is strictly healthy thinking about Henry, but given the circumstances - and given how much she's portrayed to love him - I don't really think that's wrong.
