I don't appreciate being automatically branded as a possible pervert for the sole reason that I am a fan of Hetalia. Especially not based on what is said in a kink meme.

It is your problem if you want to judge everyone in a community on the basis of "It might be them", when quite clearly it isn't everyone. If you cannot get over your paranoia, stay out of the fandom; we don't need you there, but we honestly don't like being judged for our innocent interest in a work of historical fiction.

It's not like we live life afraid to make friends because every single person you meet might be that terrorist that got away, or that pedophile that never got caught, or the rapist that lives in your area. Think about it, but essentially it's your choice.

If the Rape of Nanking fic or the China raping Tibet fics (fics) alone weren't bad enough, the fact that no one ever stood up and said "this is unacceptable" to it, or about it, and instead just implicitly supported it by letting it go by without complaint is difficult for me to forgive. Saying "oh, it's the kinkmeme, what do you expect" is shirking responsibility for it. It's the kinkmeme for your fandom, and the people in it are from your fandom, and writing off fic about the Rape of Nanking as a natural consequence of a kinkmeme in your fandom is utterly horrifying.

This isn't like other kinkmemes. Writing fic about these tragedies isn't like writing incest or shota. This is the trivialization of the suffering of thousands of real people so people can get off on them. If you want me to believe that Hetalia fandom isn't like this, that these guys are a fringe group of wackos that everyone condemns, then Hetalia fandom should stand up and condemn fics like this for the atrocities they are. Letting them exist and be endorsed, supported by others without a single complaint, just makes it look like your entire fandom doesn't care.

How could I not judge a fandom that doesn't seem to care that people are getting off on racism and China raping Tibet?

People DIDN'T support it. You know what people did? They saw that it wasn't to their liking, and they hit the back button.

For those people who do read the kink meme on a regular basis, I can accept some responsibility, but I still don't think it's fair to judge the fandom as a whole. It's a handful out of 30+ pages, and I'm pretty sure only a small fraction of the fandom peruses the kink meme itself. People who read it and aren't interested probably don't even let the words register -- I've read the kink meme myself and I don't remember half the prompts up there.

The meme itself? It's not widely disseminated, and not everyone is sure that it exists. Now the handful that read fandom_secrets do, because of this secret, so you're free to judge us if nothing gets "done". I personally don't think more than a few people will read those fics and think "ooh, hot", but it's up to you to judge those few as representative of the whole fandom, and our lack of justice. People think it's iffy as it is, looking at the responses of hetalia fans on this secret, but I think the problem is that people don't want to stir up trouble, which is why the fandom is as mild as it is.

I've gone back and read some of the fics in question to see what they're like, and the Nanking one isn't about getting off on it, and the writer seemed to be aware that it wasn't a light topic. I think people do have in their minds some of the taboos, and it is possible to treat things like this with gravity; it's an iffy subject, especially on a kink meme, but I think it's legitimate.

And in the end, for those people who avoid the kink meme entirely, not knowing these sort of fics even get written, I still think it is very unfair.

I wasn't aware that prompts like these existed on the kink meme, and I'm pretty sure not everyone in the fandom knows there even is a kink meme to begin with. The situation is not, I assure you, some shameful dirty secret that the entire Hetalia community has always been aware of but refused to acknowledge. Some of us are just as shocked as you are.

But that's not even the point. Your accusation is well-founded, but somehow it still seems a bit rich to pin it all on the Hetalia fandom. In fact, up until now, no one publicly said anything about these prompts. No one at all, not even the anti camp. Many people, both in and outside of the fandom, probably saw these, made a face, and moved on. No one said anything. The best response someone could think of was to make a fandom secret, and after that, plenty of Hetalia fans are speaking out to condemn the offense. So at least there's that.

The only reason this is all happening now, instead of any other time, is because the issue is just now being brought into the lime light. Believe me, it's not just fandom etiquette that insists you have to ignore what you don't want to see. Lots of people, when faced with topics they find distasteful, choose to ignore rather than to instigate. It doesn't mean they support or silently endorse whatever the hell's going on, for God's sake, it just means they want to avoid trouble (or wank, to make it more relevant). I know that's not the way it is on F!S, and I'm not saying it's right, but it is what it is. Everyone has been in this situation. It is not my fandom, it is not his or her fandom, it's just how people are wired.

Fandom isn't even the tip of the iceberg. When I go back to China, I am actually instructed by my school not to actively engage in arguments about sensitive topics. I don't believe for a moment this means that my university supports the people who deny the Tiananmen Massacre ever occurred, but if I don't I keep my mouth shut things go to shit for everyone. Sure, fandom isn't even close to the same thing, but I can still see why people would be satisfied with keeping the unsavory restricted to the anonymous kink meme, while making sure that the same would not fly anywhere in the main community. The situation reflects badly on the fandom, no one is denying that, but I can't help but think that by making this blanket statement, you're intentionally exaggerating the extent to which the fans are at fault.
