What's your kudos/comment/general fic response policy?
(Anonymous) 2020-08-01 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)Re: What's your kudos/comment/general fic response policy?
(Anonymous) 2020-08-01 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)Comment -> can mean two different things. One, I absolutely LOVED this fic, like it's one of my all-time favorite things I've ever read and I want to clutch it to my chest forever. Two, I liked this fic a lot and it had some specific element that I want to encourage more of - usually, a trope, pairing or fandom that I think doesn't get enough love, or a writer who seems new to fandom.
Re: What's your kudos/comment/general fic response policy?
(Anonymous) 2020-08-01 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)If it's very popular or has a lot of kudos I'm less inclined to do it, because I feel it won't mean as much to the author. I might do it anyways because it doesn't take that much though.
Re: What's your kudos/comment/general fic response policy?
(Anonymous) 2020-08-01 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)Comment if I really liked it, or have something to say, or want to say thank you
- if I disliked it, I do nothing. I will delete the fic (I often download loads of fic to my kindle to read later, keep the ones I like (mental note to go back to kudos/comment), delete the ones I didn't.
Mental note of authors to avoid if it was terrible.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-01 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)Re: What's your kudos/comment/general fic response policy?
(Anonymous) 2020-08-01 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)A comment when I really liked it and can motivate myself to write something.
Re: What's your kudos/comment/general fic response policy?
(Anonymous) 2020-08-01 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)Commenting kind of varies. I use to leave a comment on every fic I enjoyed, but they were mostly 'I love this/great work!' short kind of comments - and after hearing how mad some fic writers get after receiving those kind of comments, I've pretty much stopped doing that.
If I really love it and get the emotional inspiration to do so - I'll write a longer comment, even when a fic is getting responses to the comments because it's a moment to express how a really felt about a fic.
Unfortunately there are a lot of fics where, even though they were enjoyable to read, I'll be stuck on how to articulate why I enjoyed it and end up leaving it with the intention of coming back to comment - but mostly end up forgetting to do so (there have been times where it had taken me a year to come back to comment so...yeah).
Re: What's your kudos/comment/general fic response policy?
(Anonymous) 2020-08-01 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)I don't leave comments very often, but I'm trying to get better about it. I think ideally I would leave comments for fics that I felt were around an 8/10 or better.
Not gonna lie, there are definitely times I would love to show my disdain for a fic in some way. But I know that's not appropriate fandom behavior so I don't do it. The only time I showed my disdain for a fic was when the author deliberately tagged a very dark fic with misleading, fluffy tags, as a "prank." In that case, it wasn't the fic I expressed my disdain for, it was the author, for being a prick.
Re: What's your kudos/comment/general fic response policy?
(Anonymous) 2020-08-01 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)After not reading fic in a loooooooong time (none of the things I've been into in the past several years have been well known or popular enough to have a fandom), I've gotten a bit back into it lately, and I would like to leave kudos/comments, I just don't know if I even can since I don't have an AO3 account, and I don't know the...etiquette, for lack of a better word, about it. I mean, the last time I was reading fic was back on LJ, and commenting wasn't a big deal because I knew (and was sometimes friends with) most of the authors, but now I feel almost...intimidated, I guess. IDK.
Re: What's your kudos/comment/general fic response policy?
(Anonymous) 2020-08-01 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)I can't really imagine anyone not appreciating a positive comment on their work. Also, if you want to you can choose a name for yourself to put in the header, so that the author will know it's you if you comment on their work more than once.
That said, IIRC it's pretty easy to make an AO3 account. You don't have to post fic or anything like that. Lots of people who are just readers still have AO3 accounts. I only have two little ficlets on my AO3, and for like eight years I had no fics posted at all.
Re: What's your kudos/comment/general fic response policy?
(Anonymous) 2020-08-01 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)I didn't even know if the site would let you leave a kudos or comment without an account, so that's good to know!
I might just make an account, though, if it's easy to do. For some reason I thought you had to be invited by a current user, or that the site only accepted new accounts at specific rare times, or something where it was limited and you couldn't just make one anytime whenever you wanted (to prevent spam or something, I think?) but I'm not sure where I got that from.
no subject
(Anonymous) 2020-08-01 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)I would say go, try to make an account, and you'll probably know pretty quickly if it's going to work or not. (I kind of assume it can't be that hard, considering like several million people have accounts.)
Good luck. :)
Also, I think allowing anon commenting might be a feature? Honestly, I'm not a very skilled AO3 user. My knowledge of the site is very basic compared to most people. So I'm just guessing with a lot of this. But I know for sure that lots of people leave anon comments. I'm just not sure if you can always, 100% of the time leave anon comments, or if some fics disallow it.
Re: What's your kudos/comment/general fic response policy?
(Anonymous) 2020-08-01 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)If I didn't like it, I just won't finish reading it, but if the fic was particularly awful, I'll add the author to my block list.
Re: What's your kudos/comment/general fic response policy?
(Anonymous) 2020-08-01 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)Comment: usually if there's one particular thing that really stands out for me like a great line or scene. If a fic stays with me and I reread it I will usually try and comment too.
Re: What's your kudos/comment/general fic response policy?
(Anonymous) 2020-08-01 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)if i don't like a fic i don't do anything, i never leave rude comments, but if there's a writer in a fandom who's work i don't like, then i remove them from my search for good so i never had to see their fic again.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-02 12:17 am (UTC)(link)Re: What's your kudos/comment/general fic response policy?
(Anonymous) 2020-08-02 03:46 am (UTC)(link)If I really really enjoyed, comment.
Comments usually express my enjoyment, encouragement, and thanks.
If I didn't like it, I don't bother with anything. What for? Especially if it's something stylistic or related to plot. What am I gonna say? I don't like the way you write and I was a fool for having hope your summary would lead to something better than this weak plot that had potential but was poorly executed? Nah. Too much energy over something rather subjective.
