It's always a cheap plot device too with little thought put behind it. More acceptance of all such characters would be nice and I'd REALLY love to see a sidekick-type character who displays limited to no emotion that still serves to be very helpful to a protagonist. Sidekicks tend to be portrayed as energetic as opposed to stoic and having the reverse be explored more often could be fun.
