I don’t know about animated vids, but that’s definitely been the trend in live action vids for ages now, and yeah, I hate it.

I miss the old days of vidding fandom. Not that I was a vidder, I wasn’t, but I really love fanvids in that classic vidder style.

Vids with dialogue can be very well edited, but I’m still usually not into them. It just feels like the show, set to music, and for me it’s like, what’s the point?

However, if the vidder is actually noticeably lowering the volume on the music track in order to showcase the dialogue, that’s just another whole level of nope, for me. 98% of the time, that’s just bad vid editing, IMO.

I would understand the impulse to redeem Azula a lot more if ATLA were a show full of good, heroic men, and afterthought female characters. When a text is sexist, I understand the impulse to treat the canonical narrative as unreliable and suspect, like, “Is she really this awful, though, or is this just a bunch of men’s perspective on her?”

But ATLA is remarkably unsexist, IMO, and it has numerous fantastic female characters who are every bit as strong, complex, and pivotal to the plot as the male characters. So in this case, I don’t even slightly share that impulse to sympathize with Azula and minimize her failings and wrongdoings.

Not saying people are Bad for being sympathetic to her, or whatever. Everyone can do what they want, obviously. I’m just very much not into it.

I agree, for the most part.

I think the kind of fic where it's basically an AU where all of the canon characters have the same personality types and niche interests as the person writing / reading the fic is almost its own subgenre of fanfic at this point, and I get the appeal. But it has to really knock it out of the park for me to not find it vaguely annoying.

Yes! Yes!! This is especially annoying in shows where the focus is on a professional workplace and/or setting where they're battling life and death situations. Sorry, can't talk about feelings right now as I have important things to do and lives to save. Sometimes being emotional is a legitimate detriment to the situation and being the "heart of the team" or whatever does. not. help.
