Real shit

I'm getting my friends to play so we can fan together over everything

(Anonymous) 2020-08-03 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
He's better than Zenos, but the whole 'woobie, destroyer of worlds' thing is pretty old and threadbare.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-04 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Always been tempted by FF14(RR) for the story and world but know that MMOs have the potential for me to be addicting and unhealthy. I don't like feeling constant urges to play a game, even if I like the game. Would play it but am trying to limit gaming to around ~4 hours a week at most (heavy moderation to avoid time-sink habit/compulsive gaming) and know I wouldn't get very far into something this huge at that rate.

Weirdly jealous of you OP that you've experienced it

Having put in 30+ days of playtime in the last year and a half and ONLY JUST FINISHING SHADOWBRINGERS... the journey is so worth it. FFXIV is a great game to just meander about and savor, and Shadowbringers is a great reward for taking your time to get invested in everyone and their subplots.

lol He's not a great villain given the game wants us to sympathize with a guy who wants to omnicide everything Not His People because his people have a bigger mana pool and longer lives. That's it. That's all the Ancients have over current people.

And they have to DEBATE on if they want to help others, and not once does it come up to them to do it because it's the right thing to do. It's always about their benefit, nevermind the fucking conformity. His story is coming from the sad Space Nazi who has zero care for anything else Not Like Him until the end. He didn't see the WoL, he saw the person he knew and nothing more or nothing less--someone he hoped he could persuade into being on his side.

I liked Emet-Selch until so many fans sucked his dick about how big a woobie he is and how SAD he is like that erases the fact he's helped kill entire planets just because they aren't populated by people like him.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-04 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
tbf, his degree of agency is debatable.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-04 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, they are very deliberately not mentioning the whole 'Zodiark tempers its minions' thing.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-04 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Boo hoo tempering, sorry but he still chooses omnicide of millions of people when what Zodiark wanted was to... Stabilize the star--which he did. That was his explicit summoning purpose. They're the ones who decided to keep feeding the guys because they wanted things to go back to how things were.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-04 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Found the anti I guess? It is a bit more nuanced than that and you fucking know it, the game only wanted you to sympathize with him to a point, and in the end he was always going to be the ShB final boss.

He had to be put down, but there is that lingering 'what if?' concerning what he would've done if WoL *was* strong enough to hold all that Light. Could've been interesting to see an Ascian on your side for once.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-04 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
People have literally told me he was right to want to literally kill everything. Because he was sad and missed his loved ones.

Sorry, but having lost loved ones in the past year, that don't give someone an excuse to omnicide people. It might be a little more nuanced, but the dude uses literal Nazi rhetoric of "I find you more akin to an animal than a person so it's not really murder."

(Anonymous) 2020-08-04 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Most people's reaction to Emet-Selch tends to be 'okay, you got a reason for all this, but no, still gotta shank you because what exists now matters too and you can't really bring back the dead'.

Yeah, there are the usual squeeing fangirls that think he can do no wrong but that happens for every villain that's even remotely sympathetic.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-04 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I saw it all over right after ShB. I still see it. I didn't like that we got no choice in our reaction to his asking us to ~remember his people~, either, given that he would never have thought twice about ours.

I have the same feelings over Gaius "Daughterfucker" Baelsar.

That's what made him such a compelling villain, honestly: the fact that he seemed genuinely willing to switch sides if the WoL could prove to him that there was a better way.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-04 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
What I find interesting is even if he wanted to, COULD he? Due to the tempering, would he still feel compelled to fight the WoL? Like, he may want to, and he's obviously tired to death of the whole lot, but not fighting doesn't seem like a realistic option for him if it's unlikely to end in a Rejoining.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-04 09:12 am (UTC)(link)
He didn't want to switch sides. He wanted US to switch sides. What he was looking for wasn't for us to be able to carry the torch, he was looking for us to be the person he lost millennia ago. That felt pretty obvious to me. His "high expectations" were that he wanted us to be someone we're not--someone he felt he could convince. Is he tired? Yeah. Does he want to die? Probably. But I don't think for a second he was EVER going to want to switch sides. In the end, even his final request was all about remembering HIS people.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-04 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with this. It's really astonishing how many people have fallen for the "woobie destroy of worlds" thing, again. If you're a man and you're sad and you want to commit genocide because of Reasons then everything then you're a DEEP AMAZING MORALLY GRAY COMPLICATED ANTI-HERO or something.

when I finished SHB I wasn't very impressed with it. Emet's story is quite tragic but to me it's the exact same story as the the Warring Triad trials: he's taking his anger and hurt out on the wrong people because the person or people that committed the original crime are gone forever.

Emet Selch is literally a rip off of the Heavensward bonus bosses. But for some reason people think this is the greatest story Final Fantasy has ever told? Does no one think about what they see in front of them? Hell even Zenos's story has a lot of similarity to Emet's. Emet Selch is a rip off of a rip off of a rip off of a rip off.

He's so boring and trite but I guess he has the accent so players think he's deep or something lol. It wasn't so bad right after the expansion came out but now players are still huffing their own farts talking about how amazing it was to have a whiny guy with a slouch follow you around complaining and talking about how the NPCs aren't real people or whatever. Just baffling.

I feel like people miss the text in Amaurot that seems to imply they themselves set off events on accident.

"Yet it was neither claw nor flame, but our very sins stacked to the heavens where they took root, corrupting its halls..."

The implications of this line are that at least one of them believes it was their own sins (possibly their abuse of their powers) that led to their downfall.

I like ShB. It gave me many feelings. But it wasn't because of Emet-Selch.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-04 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT

Thing is I really liked Amaurot and the story behind it, I just think that Emet was a bad representative because of the threadbare woobie destroyer of worlds bit (referenced from a previous comment.) I'd like to know more about them and what happened. But we haven't been able to spend much time in Amaurot thanks to the Scions taking up so much space and Emet being sorta lame. And now that 5.3 is going to end the SHB story we (probably) won't get to find out more at least in that space.

Hopefully I'm wrong and the devs won't waste this opportunity but with the decrease in content overall that was announced before Covid was on anyone's minds, I'm just not hopeful like I was post-HW.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-05 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
Doing all the sidequests and paying attention to what all Emet-Selch said in the dungeon I got a pretty clear picture. It's described as a utopia, but it's really just bog-standard conformity where individualism is treated as a childish thing you'll grown out of, empathy is optional, etc.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-04 11:54 am (UTC)(link)
And then there's overanalyzing something into the dirt. You don't have to justify not liking Emet, just say you don't like him.

It's a fucking MMO, it's never going to be that deep to begin with. In fact they're very likely to be killing G'raha off with this next patch just so they can say they killed off another friend of the WoL for cheap drama.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-04 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt.

someone not liking this character isn't a personal attack on you.

I just wanted to talk about why Emet Selch is a lame character imo lol. It's okay bro, you don't have to agree with me so calm down.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-04 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
But it's NOT overanalyzing to make him a woobie, I see.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-05 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's the problem with having a strong main story quest in an MMO -- it's gotta stay linear, so this is just gonna keep happening with future expansions.

Like, yeah, there's story skips, but the older expansions are still good enough to be worth playing. So the best way to play them is in order. Which makes it kinda hard to gush about the latest content to the friend you finally just pulled in.
