I'm finally getting into Reddit, and I'm looking for subreddits to follow. So far I've just got ask Reddit, idiots in cars, a couple fandom ones, and then a bunch of cute animal ones.

What are your favorite Subreddits?

earthporn, weatherporn, everything involving cats and dogs being cute and/or weird (shout out to whatswrongwithyourcat). I admit I also followed r/cheese.

honestly though, you have to heavily curate your feed and don't be tempted to follow dramatic subreddits if they're just going to wear on your mental health. I've quit or taken months-long breaks from it because even just trying to stay on top of news or "funny" stories like I don't work here lady end up hurting more than helping. I tried following wholesomememes but it was just this neverending parade of saccarine, useless platitude, boring as fuck content. humanbeingsbeingbros is wholesome without being cloying and boring.

/thriftstorehauls if you like seeing what cool things people find, though it always makes me very envious of other peoples' good luck!

/crossstitch and /embroidery are neat if you like needlecrafts at all, and even if you're not into it yourself, seeing the pictures of finished projects is fun.

/cozyplaces - just pictures of cozy places.

/earthporn - Beautiful photos

/amateurroomporn - people trying their hand at interior design and posting the results.

/bakeoff - Great British Bake Off

/breadit - people experimenting with bread baking

/charcuterieboard - pictures of the charcuterie boards people make

/whatisthisplant - for IDing mystery plants!

All the gardening and nature ones. Cozyplaces. Mealprepsunday and a few other cooking ones. Powerwashingporn because it's weirdly satisfying. Bettafish to look at all their lovely little angry faces.

r/casualuk is a non-political UK sub (you get autodeleted or even banned if you mention anything to do with the p-word) - obviously if you're not in the UK some of the jokes might not land BUT there's plenty of people from other countries in there and anyone who abuses our international friends (e.g. Americans) usually gets downvoted.

I also really like r/lingling40hours at the moment but probably only makes sense if you follow TwoSet violin on Youtube.

r/rabbits. I currently don't have any rabbits but love them and because they rarely get as much attention on r/aww compared to dogs and cats, it's nice to have a rabbit-only sub.

Re: Reddit

(Anonymous) 2020-08-10 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
There are others I like that have already been mentioned, but these are my main ones (that I haven't seen anyone else mention).

politics - Articles from various news sources with discussion, discussion/chat posts for different events (election days, House/Senate hearings, press conferences, etc.) and also occasional AMAs (which stands for Ask Me Anything, basically Q & A sessions that get posted on various subreddits with people involved in whatever that subreddit's topic is) with politicians/political organizers/journalists. I realize live chatting while watching a congressional hearing on CSPAN probably sounds incredibly dorky but I'm a political junkie and this is definitely my most visited subreddit. There are some idiots that post there, but for the most part people are fairly reasonable.

unresolvedmysteries - Discussion about true crime and various mysterious happenings. There's also unsolvedmysteries, which is about the TV show, but this one is unREsolvedmysteries (I'm drawing attention to that because it's easy to read it as unsolved and a lot of the time people get them confused).

badwomensanatomy/nothowgirlswork/insanepeoplefacebook/InfowarriorRides/AreTheStraightsOK - These kind of all fall into the same category, it's basically just making fun of idiots on social media for various things (not understanding women for the first two, people being dumbasses on all sorts of issues, people putting too many crazy stickers on their cars, straight people saying and doing questionable things).

ShitAmericansSay - This one is kind of similar to the ones above, but I'm separating it because I don't love it quite as much. Sometimes it's super entertaining/amusing, but there are also times it goes a little bit too far into "let's bash all Americans even when they don't agree with the ones being morons" territory and that kind of makes me sad.

byebyejob/convenientcop/instantkarma - People who are being idiots/jerks getting what they deserve. These aren't exactly nice, but they're satisfying when you're in the mood for schadenfreude.

publicfreakout - Videos of people being awful in public. Generally these are viral videos that you'll see all over Twitter and elsewhere, but at least for me personally, Reddit is a bit easier to navigate (and easier to have/read discussions than on the other sites).

Also, news. I don't visit it that frequently because it's news from all over the US (there's also worldnews) and it's just too much to keep up with, but a lot of the time when there's something big happening, this is where I can find the most up to date info other than Twitter (and again, a bit easier to navigate, at least for me). Of course there's a fair amount of people posting nonsense in those threads as well, but it still can be useful.

And there's television/books for general discussion of those things, then others for specific shows/books.

Oh, and nosleep can be fun. It's a combination of horror stories and RP, and while there's some dumb stuff, there've been some really good, creepy stories posted there.

Also tipofmytongue if you're trying to remember some movie/song/commercial/TV episode/whatever.

There are others that are entertaining/fun that I'll visit from time to time but not really on a regular basis, and there are way too many to remember them all (explainlikeimfive, outoftheloop, LifeProTips, Showerthoughts, tifu, BoneAppleTea, and MurderedByWords are some of them).

Then there are the more drama-y ones (relationships and AmITheAsshole, among others) that can sometimes be interesting, but they also tend to be exhausting and negative a lot of the time and it's pretty rare that I'm in the mood for them these days.

Honestly, there are probably a ton more that I'm not thinking of at the moment. You can find a subreddit for pretty much anything you can think of (and even weird ones that you never would've thought of that you'll randomly come across from people linking them on unrelated subreddits). Some subreddits are awful, but I find it's pretty easy to avoid them, and in general I think Reddit's pretty cool (clearly I spend way too much time there!).

r/WitchesvsPatriarchy - nice witchy feminist/egalitarian sub.
r/accidentalgeenhouses - see miniature gardens growing unexpectedly under old glass tables or in abandoned thermometers!
r/beautyguruchatter - because I'm trash for Youtube makeup tutorials.
r/starwarscantina - sub focused on SW positivity and discouraging seque/prequel hate or toxic harassing.
r/megalophobia, r/thalassophobia and r/submechanophobia, because these are my phobias and I'm a masochist.
r/oldpeoplefacebook and r/scottishpeopletwitter because they're just funny.
Oh, and a few mineral/gem based ones which I find satisfying - r/shinypreciousgems and r/mineralporn have some gorgeous pictures. I just feel relaxed watching different gems sparkling.

Two Towers and Return of the King are the only movies I'm planning on watching this week. I will be finishing Murder Maps first. My month free of Amazon Prime ends after tomorrow, so I have until then to finish the last season. After that, I can watch what I want, and LOTR is what I want. Sadly, Fellowship is in one of the boxes we put in storage.

Re-watched the Back to the Future films this week. My husband and I decided that although objectively the first one is probably better, the second is our favourite. The third is just kinda there heh.

But I couldn't really enjoy II as much as I usually do because it feels like Biff being in control of everything in the alt!1985 scenes hits too close to the bone at this moment in time.

Now not watching a film but finally getting through the first season of The Terror. I read the book last year and really enjoyed it. On episode 3 - good adaption so far. But man I very much wanted Hickey to just fucking die already while reading the book so this is going to be testing!

AO3 question: Orphaning fics vs. throwaway account

(Anonymous) 2020-08-09 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not very active on AO3 so maybe some of you can clear this question up for me... is there really any advantage to orphaning a fic that you couldn't also accomplish by making a separate throwaway account to post it? I was under the impression that the latter would let you edit, delete and respond to comments if you want, where orphaning puts it completely out of your hands.
