This is such a naive and Western-centric argument, ugh.

Let's compare it to The Witcher: Geralt was canonically bi in the source material but the series didn't show any of that because....well, I guess they just didn't want to. This is an American-made show and they could have, but they just didn't at all because ew gay. There is no indication whatsoever in the show that Geralt is attracted to men.

On the other hand, in The Untamed, where Wei Wuxian is also bi in the source material, we have proof from the cast, crew, and final product of the intention behind it (in the show, off the top of my head: the carving on his bed, the three bows, the rabbits, the handfasting, the roosters, the cut sleeve, "soulmate", caring for a child together, and so on), and they COULD NOT show it. It is not an American show. They are being forced to not show more. They would have if they could.

To act like these are the same situation at all is just a bad faith argument all around.

The OP doesn't seem to be pretending the situations can be compared, that it's fair to expect China to be able to air something gay. It's not saying the people involved in the production of the show are to blame for it not being gay. It's just saying you can't make exceptions for what counts as text (canon) as opposed to subtext (not canon) just because it's from a country that doesn't allow that. It's saying, well, it sucks that it's gotta be this way but if it's from China then it's not gonna be gay. Which is true.

DA - Well put. I think that is exactly what OP is saying.

I'm hard-pressed to say whether I feel the same way as OP or not. I kind of do and I kind of don't. But I think you've clarified their opinion very well. And personally, I don't think it's an unreasonable stance. A debatable stance, definitely, but not an unreasonable one.

The logic doesn't really work with Chinese shows though considering even het relationships are super chaste, sometimes even without kissing or major love declarations and are still considered textual canon.

Well, but that's hets, dontchaknow. They get to be considered valid no matter what.

Thing is, this is the same argument as saying Western media with deliberate queer subtext published before having openly queer characters in media was accepted is not queer media at all. Which... no. Intent matters, especially in the face of censorship.

Geralt is canonically bi in the novels? Do you have a link that talks about this? I haven't read them yet so I tried to google info about it and could only find people talking about how very straight he is.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-11 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
He's definitely not. Some delusional fans claim he was because he and the dragon guy fucked two girls in the baths together, and the delusional fans think they must've also fucked each other. There's zero hints to suggest they did.

Like... it's a Polish series. Chances that the main character is canonically not-straight and it still being as successful as it is are pretty damn low. Poland isn't exactly better about LGBT rights than China.
