I think it's really sad that people feel they can't share their opinions, but I hope the OP wasn't talking about discussions of politics in fandom. Because, seriously, that is not the place to be talking about it. I remember reading comments on the Pushing Daisies community that related the show to Obama and McCain, and honestly, it just seems stupid and likely to start arguments if you do that.

That said, open, respectful political discussion is important, and it's sad that it's so rare. Even though we disagree politically, you have just as much right to express your opinion and not be attacked.

Unless, you know, you said something like "(Insert Politician) is an idiot and so are their supporters" without any evidence or real criticism to back it up. Then, I don't care what party you're a member of, get ready for a shit storm.

Also, I love Obama, but your icon is made of win. It makes me laugh.

I never bring up politics in fandom. I'm mostly referring to those times back in high school when random people would come up to me and go, "OMG WHY ARE YOU VOTING FOR [insert name of unpopular candidate here]?" and they'd keep berating me until I answered something, then they wouldn't shut up about it. There are other times too, when I've been in political discussions, and I've been the only one who had the different opinion, so when I bring it up after listening to the other side for a very long time, I'm just stomped on for having a different opinion.

Hopefully the OP didn't bring this up in a random fandom forum out of the blue, because that would be kind of stupid. If this was already part of a politics discussion, though, and they were stomped on, then that's not cool, and I completely sympathize with them. :\

I agree, though, about the "[Politician] is stupid and so are their supporters" thing. By calling the supporters of an opinion "stupid" is ignorant and intolerant. By jumping to conclusions about members of a party is very intolerant too. Like the person who replied to my comment, for example... He or she automatically assumed that I'm homophobic simply because I said that I sympathized with the OP of the secret (which mentioned nothing about homosexuality). I'm not seeing a connection. :|

Okay I think I'm done rambling. All in all, people should respect other people's opinions and not jump to conclusions. This applies to both sides. :|

Yeah, I think it's a human condition that in politics a lot of people are just bullies and will treat anyone different like crap. I see that in my own family all the time.

And that's really stupid that the anonymous commenter chose to use your original empathetic comment as a jumping-off point for political accusations. There are a hell of a lot more reasons one would be conservative, rather than just gay rights. For god's sake, look at the log cabin Republicans.

But, yes, I thought I would reply with my show of solidarity that people who crudely persecute others for differing opinions are stupid.
