I want to be supportive of wlw in the media and all, but didn't really like Sissy or this ship. It was a solid "meh" to me.

What fandom is this?

(Anonymous) 2020-08-14 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Umbrella Academy

I think I may have been into it more if the IG page for Umbrella Academy hadn’t pretty much given Vissy away before I finished it. I did like Sissy and was interested in her story as a lonely housewife in the 1960s with a son who has autism and a husband who isn’t very present emotionally and I kinda like her with Vanya, but then she made a very stupid choice and it really soured me on her character given all that happened afterwards.

Same. My sympathy dries up when characters make really, really boneheadedly stupid decisions that backfire and they're totally surprised when really, they shouldn't be. Because it was stupid.

What stupid choice? I did think choosing not to go to the future was kind of stupid, but I don't think you're talking about that since that happens at the very end and you say "given all that happened afterwards."

Oh no, not that, but I thought that was dumb too. I know she gave her reasons for not wanting to go to the future, but at the same time, she had a dead husband in her yard (or missing if Herb and co cleaned him up too), so I thought it was dumb for her to stay in her time period even if she ran away to California.

I meant the part where Sissy left a note for her husband before running away with Vanya.

Ah, okay. Yeah, that was dumb. For me that was dumb in a way I can forgive. I mean, she was unsatisfied in her marriage, but they still built a life together. Add to that all the social values and mores of the time, and I can understand how she felt like she couldn't just walk out on him without a word.

She absolutely shouldn't have left the note. But I find it easy to understand why she did, so it doesn't really bother me.

I get that she didn't think they'd be able to have a normal life in the future, but... living the rest of your life on the run with your kid and probably being a murder suspect because your husband suddenly disappeared with no explanation is going to be normal? How so?

Re: spoilers

(Anonymous) 2020-08-14 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT - Right? Hell, even without the suspicion of murder to deal with, I still think she should've gone to the future. Because while we're far from great in how we deal with LGBT people and kids with autism in 2020, we still do a hell of a lot better than we did in the 60s.

I actually think she was right that being with Vanya would've been dangerous and unstable for her and her son. Not because Vanya is dangerous (she seems pretty stable now), but because trouble clearly follows The Umbrella Academy around. So I have no problem with her going to the future and then heading off on her own. But as fucked up as 2020 has been, I'd still take the present over the 60s, especially if I were a lesbian with an autistic son.

nayrt but for me, it was...

******SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT*****

...leaving a note for Carl. Like oh yeah, tell your incredibly unsympathetic husband (whose brother is a state trooper) who controls your life and your son's life and has threatened to lock up your child in an institution that oh yeah, you're leaving him forever and running off with a Mystery Lesbian. That'll go well!

Postcards exist, if you feel that you must.

I disagree. During the first season, all I could think is "Why are they making poor Ellen kiss a man? Eww. She's obviously not into it."

This season, I was mostly like, "Better." I agree that the chemistry was still pretty meh, but miles above last season for me.

I wonder if Ellen Page is just not comfortable with on-screen romance. Ever since she came out, I get major do-not-touch-me vibes whenever she's on screen. A lot of times, she uses it for the character, but that always makes the romances fall flat for me.

maybe you're onto something. I saw about the same level of chemistry with Vanya in both seasons (that is, not much) but at least in S1 it could be blamed on the meds.

Same. If she weren't out, I might even wonder if she was ace (as an ace person myself, there's something about her on-screen interactions I vibe with), but obviously that is not the case.

Yeah, Vanya reads so 100% lesbian to me, it just felt so awkward when she kissed that guy. I mean, it didn't help that he was so obviously skeezy. Yick.
