Best and worst chemistry?

(Anonymous) 2020-08-14 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Which canon couples have the best and worst chemistry in your opinion?

For me
Best: Connell and Marianne in Normal People
Worst: Blah lady and shirtless Channing Tatum in Magic Mike

They're not a favorite for me, but if we're talking about chemistry, then the Smiths (aka Brad and Angelina) from Mr. and Mrs. Smith had ridiculous chemistry. I saw that movie in theaters, and it's the only time I can think of where I saw on-screen chemistry and was like, "Yeah, those actors either are fucking in real life or they're about to be."

Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter.
Elida and Amae.
Buffy and Spike.
Twelve and the Emperor of Algae.

Completely agree on Steve/Peggy and Buffy/Spike (personally I ship every possible matchup involving Buffy, Spike, and Angel as well as them as a threesome, but Buffy/Spike I do think has the best chemistry).

Want to nominate Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum in Jupiter Ascending for "worst"

It's a great movie overall and I love both of them individually but Jesus they don't work together

I wouldn't say the movie is great, but it is fun and I do enjoy it.

Best chemistry of all time:
Nick (William Powell) and Nora (Myrna Loy), from the 'Thin Man' movies (approx. 1934-47-ish).

Honestly the most comfortable and genial chemistry between them is the absolute best I've ever seen on TV. I live for them!

Best: Steve Rogers/Peggy Carter (I ship him with both Peggy and Bucky and them as a threesome, the Steve/Peggy thing was one of the few MCU romances that worked for me), Lois/Clark on Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Barney/Robin on How I Met Your Mother, Willow/Tara on Buffy, Callie/Arizona on Grey's Anatomy, Doctor/River Song (ship him/her slightly more with the Master/Missy, but that isn't really canon, and River would be my second favorite Doctor ship with the second best chemistry with the Doctor)

Worst: Doctor Strange/Christine Palmer, Thor/Jane Foster (I love Jane, just not with Thor), Steve Rogers/Sharon Carter

Best: Evie and Rick in the Mummy

Worst: John Carter and the Princess in John Carter. Though I've yet to see a film where T. Kitsch has chemistry with any actress and I don't get why.

Must agree on the Channing Tatum thing. I've never seen him have chemistry with an actress either and he's a wooden soldier to boot. Kitsch can at least act. -grumbles-

He had chemistry with Jenna Dewan in that dance movie whose name I can't remember

Which, I mean, makes sense under the circumstances

I forgot about Evie and Rick. They do have so much chemistry. And I also agree with you about John Carter and Dejah Thoris, even though I love that movie. The chemistry didn't work for me, even though the rest of the movie did.

Best = Mulder and Scully, Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian for all that it takes 50 episodes to get there, Elizabeth Bennett and Mr Darcy

Worst = Danaerys and Jon Snow, just about every get couple in throwaway generic het tv and film romances

venusundae: scully and mulder together in stark black and white (273 (only for you))

oh seconding scully and mulder, what a classic~

Re: Best and worst chemistry?

Agreed on Scully and Mulder. I don't think of their chemistry as being overly sexual in nature (even though I absolutely ship them), but they definitely do have chemistry in spades.

So agreed on Dany and Jon. No chemistry at all.

Best: Morticia and Gomez, Rick and Evie from The Mummy, Belle and Rumplestiltskin from Once Upon a Time, and Elena and Alejandro (Zorro) from the Mask of Zorro and Legend of Zorro.

Worst: idk, I feel like I mostly forget about the bad couples because they feel interchangeable a lot of the time. Also, I'm bad at distinguishing sexual/romantic chemistry from acting ability in general, so I feel like my "bad/no chemistry" list would just be a list of actors who did a shitty job (or, to be fair, were given a shitty job, I hesitated adding Belle and Rumple because Once started out ridiculous and then did a triple backflip over an entire feeding frenzy worth of sharks.)

+1

Morticia and Gomez is an extremely good example! <333

I'm bad at distinguishing sexual/romantic chemistry from acting ability in general

I was watching an interview with Jenna Fischer the other day, and she said, “For me, chemistry [between actors] is when you have to work the least to be most authentic as your character.” I thought that was wonderfully put, and really articulates why chemistry is such a broad thing that can manifest between actors in so many ways.

Which I think really ties into what you’re saying about the difficulty of distinguishing between chemistry and acting ability. Because what else is chemistry, in the broadest sense, but fellow actors who, somehow, have a simpatico as actors that helps boost their performances when they act off of each other?

Best:
Elongated-Man/Ralph Dibny's and his wonderful wife Sue Dibny~
This (below) comic sold me 120% on them being the best most wonderful couple I'd every seen in media~!!! <333

Worst: would honestly be Wally and Artemis from the Young Justice cartoon, like by far. Their actions act enough as it is, but literally the only thing you need to know about them is that in one mission they forget who everyone is. Wally and Artemis meet, get giggy with it (ala make out for a second) and once they regain their memories they are completely aghasted at the idea they kissed.
Like dudes, you can find someone attractive and not be into them, the #1 (with fireworks and a laser show included) issue with YJ is that none of the creators seem to even consider this... like, at all...

Worst: Natalie Portman/Any LI - she's a great character actress but she can't play romance to save her life.

Not romantic: Victoria/Toddy.

Romantic: I'm really digging the way that Spintossa was developed as an established married couple.

Bad: Padme/Anakin (live-action): I think Lucas generally has a tin ear when it comes to relationship dialogue. And Portman unfortunately was going through a lot of harassment issues and had a lot of her work cut.
