I've seen a lot of that sentiment around Zootopia vs. Beastars and I do not like it. IMO Beastars reads as a very poorly constructed racial allegory because one of the races in more inherently dangerous than the other one. And violence happens a lot because the predators can't curb their instincts. And I find the real world implications of this to be super gross and harmful. Whereas Zootopia makes a big point of saying that no one is inherently violent or dangerous, and societal prejudice is the actual problem. I also think Beastars has some nasty sexism in it, that Zootopia does not.

Just an added fyi, I know people have a lot of different reads on the racial aspects of Beastars, and that's totally cool and I don't think you are a bad person or anything if you disagree with me. The racial aspects of the story just read incredibly problematic to me personally.

oh no, we are totally on the same page here. i keep hearing the opposite sentiment that zootopia was problematique~ af bc people read it as a racial allegory the way beastars plays it, when as far as i know zootopia specifically meant to tackle personal bias and discrimination. i don't like the way beastars does the racial allegory personally for exactly the reasons you mention. plus just from a storytelling standpoint, i was way more engaged watching zootopia than i ever was watching any episode or even scene of beastars.

i get how people can read a lot of interesting things into beastars, i just don't myself. like i said i had to watch them lengthy video essays to even get where folks were coming from w it but i haven't been convinced yet haha. i wonder if the manga does a better job tho!

OP. Oh no worries. I totally caught that we were on the same page. I was just expanding on what you said. I just put my last paragraph in case someone else felt very passionately otherwise. Since Beastars discourse is intense.

I'm super with you about being way more engaged with Dystopia. Also, how people read things into Beastars. I can't stand the show from a narrative, character, and thematic standpoint, and I don't agree with the majority of the fans who think it's really smart. But I absolutely love reading Beastars anime discourse. Probably why I made the secret lol

I think this was my exact problem with it. You can't use animals, who have instincts that might be dangerous to other animals, to say this. That's actually a really shitty thing to get across to little humans who have to interact with both animals and humans, and it's conversely very condescending to pretend that classes who have been deeply harmed by other classes are the ones who have to figure out how to coexist.
