I'm curious about this, too. I would imagine that selling your own stuff using someone else's copyrighted characters would get you in trouble. (I used to work with some Native American jewelers who got C&D letters from Disney over making Mickey Mouse rings.)

It's a grey area. At the moment Patreon seems to be putting out statements about how you shouldn't do that but not actually going after anyone who is, unless they're writing/drawing extremely sexual stuff with well-known in-copyright characters. So if that's what this author is doing, OP can always dob her in!

lets just say that it has to be transformative in a important way. the most famous version is "the wind done gone" which is published bestselling fanfic of "gone with the wind" from the black characters perspective. margaret mitchell's estate lost the lawsuit and validated fic forever more
