I can't seem to find exact figures, but if Left 4 Dead "needed" a fandom, Valve wouldn't be suggesting it to reach higher sales numbers than Orange Box (http://www.videogamer.com/xbox360/left_4_dead/news-10099.html). That looks like plenty of fans to me.

Fanbase ≠ Fandom, apparently, IDK.

So a something can have a large fanbase, but no fandom. Sounds like Left 4 Dead is one of those.

That doesn't make a lick of sense. Your fanbase is your fandom. The people buying the game, playing the game, talking to their buddies about the game--that's the fandom. If it has a fanbase, it has a fandom, because those terms describe the same thing.

I know it doesn't, but I'm trying to see it from the secret poster's POV. I think, by "fandom," he or she wants to see fanfic/fanart/meta/etc, and that's what defines "fandom" to him/her.

Then perhaps the reason they're not finding the fandom is their definition of "fandom" is far too narrow. Fanfic and fanart are but small parts of the fandom whole. If all they want is fanfic, then that's what they should be asking for. The fandom's there.
