If it weren't for the fact that I started studying Japanese back in my stupid fangirl days and did the whole scanslation thing, I would never have discovered my love of learning languages and I would still have "no idea what I want to do in my real life" instead of having an actual career aspiration (which is to become a translator -- and not of anime/manga, either). I may have picked it up for all the wrong reasons, but on the whole, I'm glad I did.

This! When I was in my younger teenage years I was obsessed with all things Japan and anime and whatever. I cringe at it now, especially since I don't hold anime in any higher regard than any other genre or go out of my way to seek new series' out anymore... but without that youthful obsession I would have never had the life-changing experiences in Japan that I did. I spent a year going to high school, working a part time job teaching English conversation to a small group of men at Mitsubishi, and living with a host family. Just plain ol' experiencing life in a new way. It opened my eyes up to what Japan really is, and so much more than that. I did a lot of growing up there, and becoming more independent and more of a humanitarian. It's no better or worse than anywhere else on earth, but it's home to me now just as much as anywhere else I've spent time growing up.

I do feel a similar annoyance that the secret poster does in relation to the people described by the secret, so I can sympathize... I view it as a type of ignorance, but honestly? These people will most likely grow out of it just as I did.

Yeah, I can understand why secret-poster is annoyed, because those people get on my nerves too -- I just think s/he's wrong that nothing productive ever comes out of it, especially the "learning Japanese" part. And, as you said, most of those people do grow out of it eventually.

it's not about people that learn japanese. it's about people that think japanese is the best thing ever and the only thing that counts.
It's about this fangirls and fanboys that forget about their friends in real life just because japanese idols are more important to them, japanese music is more important to them, japanese food is more important to them....

it's about people that act like they are japanese people themselfes but they don't know anything but manga, anime, visual kei, "KAWAIIIIIIIII" and such...

not about people that like to learn japanese and that love the japanese culture.

Honey, it's not just weeaboos that are like that - nerds of all shapes and sizes can get like that about their hobbies.

That said, I'm sick of getting flak for having interest in Japanese culture and language and not being taken seriously because I like anime/manga/Japanese games as well. The two can co-exist. I've become such a closet case in my Japanese classes, and hooo, you can bet none of my Japanese acquaintances are in the know about my nerdery.

If you're the OP, then sorry, that didn't come through in your secret. Those people are really annoying, I agree, although I think most of them do grow out of it eventually.

Also, the people who learn Japanese and love the Japanese culture do tend to get lumped in with the screaming fangirls who think that Japan is a Magical Land of Happiness and believe that they know everything about it just from watching all this season's popular anime, so I guess I have a tendency to get defensive about it.

lol I already loved languages. I took German, french, italian, and spanish all in college (several were required for my degree though).. But I recently decided to toss my hat into the Japanese ring before law school apps because I'm interested in international law.

and also because I want to watch RAW anime and get it. >.>

Sad, but true.

This. I didn't start studying Japanese because of anime/manga. I don't even like anime/manga that much - or video games, for that matter. I started learning it because I like languages. I want to be a translator or interpretor in the future. The type of people she described? Yeah, they're irritating, but her complete and utter disregard for everyone that apparently has any kind of interest in Japanese culture? Is just as bad if not worse.

Yeah, I thought the OP was just referring to weeaboos. (I was totally one when I was younger, not even going to lie Dx;;) It's good to have an interest in other cultures, but when you start to fetishize* a certain ethnicity? (Like "OMG JAPAN! MUST LEARN JAPANESE BECAUSE JAPANESE BOYS ARE SO KAWAII!" whatever) That's problematic...and creepy. D:
