Sorry, I worded that poorly--I meant that "calling sexism on anything" is the way it looks. And yes, I think some people overreact to perceived sexism, just as I think that some people overreact to others calling out real sexism.

Someone who is open and self-critical doesn't have to stave off criticism.

I think you can be perfectly open and self-critical and still want to head off an argument you really don't want to get into. If I wanted to rant about why I didn't like a character, I wouldn't want to get sidetracked into a discussion of "are you sure this isn't due to sexism?", or a confrontation, even if I've thought about the question myself. Saying it fifteen times is going overboard, yes. But assuming that those people haven't even thought about their own possible sexism is pretty insulting.

I'd rather have people think that, than see blatant sexism and not call it out. This is a bad thing?

Sure, but the secret was about over defensiveness (see RE: "The MORE people get defensive about..."). Saying it once and acknowledging how the dislike might appear is one thing. Constantly reiterating your position goes into "protesting too hard" territory.

There's a point where it becomes offensive. To use the same point again, take the secret a few days back saying "everyone who doesn't like X is misogynistic." That could easily make people say, "This allegation is bullshit, and I'm not going to pay attention the next time someone cries sexism."

Unfortunately, some people are going to think that after someone points out perfectly valid examples of sexism, or if they point out a lot of little things that indicate a pattern of sexism. That doesn't mean you shouldn't point them out, but it does mean you should be careful of accusing an entire category of people of being sexist without good reason. It's rude to the people in the category who don't have sexist reasons for feeling like they do, and it's more likely to turn people off feminism in fandom than to make them think.

Upon further reflection, yeah, you're right. But in cases like these, I think benefit of the doubt is more important than proving a point. It seems likely that those people will show their sexism in other ways, and then you'll have evidence that can't be dismissed out of hand as "but they didn't say anything sexist."

You have a point. I just don't usually give people benefit of the doubt-- I'm sure they have reasons besides sexism, but I generally just assume they haven't even considered whether the social framework issues have a part in it.
