But really, in these situations, it just boils down to Salem Witch Trial tactics: someone will say something, the next person will call sexism, and then regardless of what the accused says, they are a sexist, because obviously if you disagree when someone calls you a derogatory term, you're just a double sexist/homophobe/whatever.
Think about it: if I called you a racist because you mentioned you dislike a character that's not white or whatever, if you try and prove that you're not, you're just covering up for the fact that you're a racist, obviously.
Overall I think people throw this around way too much. I admit that there are/can be genuine sexists out there, but I doubt even 3/4 of the people that are called out are actually sexist.

(Anonymous) 2008-12-17 01:29 am (UTC)(link)These are two entirely different reactions-- one is defensive, the other considers the accusation and makes a decision. The first response is akin to making an LJ post that says "This person says I'm x, an I'm clearly NOT because I'm clearly not. By the way, I'm not. What do you think?"
I've seen all of those reactions at one point or another.
Everyone is sexist. We live in a sexist society and it's impossible not to be free of that baggage. It's more than a lifetime's work getting rid of it. Thus, the whole "self-critical" thing.
