Maple syrup can technically be used as a sweetener anywhere you would usually use sugar or honey. TECHNICALLY. It does, however, have a slightly different flavor than honey or cane sugar, though, so it's sometimes an acquired taste. I personally don't care for it because people tend to over-use it as a condiment or main sweetener and I tend to dislike sweets. But in the USA, particularly in the South and Eastern states, it's a common ingredient in all kinds of things, from chili to fried chicken, glazes for meats, gravy, vegetables, particularly beans, corn and apple breads, pastries of all kinds, stews and rice and the list goes on. It's hard to describe to someone who's never tasted it, but in savory recipes like that, just a little bit adds this level of sweet mapleness that's super-yummy in moderation. In addition to pancakes and waffles, you also drizzle it into grits or oatmeal or cold cereal or on top of fruit or toast. It's also really common to see sausages and bacon flavored with maple syrup (and maple-smoked, which is different).
