This! I learned so much about social interaction from seeing how people behave in (fandom) online spaces.

Haha, you're better than me. Fandom just made conclude that people are fucking annoying and drama-obsessed. Instead of making friends at work, I just keep to myself like an anti-social asshole and ignore the gossip. (actually easier now with the Covid)

Oh, and your bonus secret wins the internet.
venusundae: draculaura cheers, excited about something (014 (life couldn't get better))

god i love this secret haha. i think fandom has taught me a lot of interpersonal skills that i didn't realize it did until i was much older. so many spaces that i had to learn to socially navigate i would not have even bothered w if i hadn't been rly invested in the fandom that brought me there. it also definitely lead me to develop a lot of other skills that i use in my career outside of just interacting w others. p corny, but i'm very grateful for it all really! <3

This is an ace secret, anon. I'm glad you've learnt so much from fandom.

I can't say I acquired the boss level people skills from fandom that you have, but it certainly was where I learnt a lot about people as a very weird kid with zero social skills. And, as someone with no positive role models in my young life, it was also where I shaped who I wanted to be from the characters I admired.

Love this secret, OP.

I actually had a job interview where the interviewer asked about fandom involvement, specifically saying that fans tended to learn a lot of skills that weren't always easy to describe on a resume. I was pleased (and impressed) by that.

Good for you.

Just did this yesterday myself about reviewing of all things. (I'm an indie author so...) People seriously don't know when their tone turns aggressive and dismissive thinking because they're calm that they're being polite and respectful.

Not how it works. Words matter. (And this is a group of authors for god's sake.) Learning both about trad publishing and being in fandom spaces has given a lot of insight. I wish I could dump more people into it. Or you know poke them into "go to youtube and twitter, learn about publishing from agents. Aieee."

God I hate seminars.

I wish you'd been my boss back when the company I worked for was sending us to communication skills seminars. (Not that Tumblr existed then. But Usenet was pretty much the same thing.)
