Other fans of The Untamed - would you call it a cheesy show with bad acting? I didn't think it was at all that bad, but my friend who normally has similar taste to me could only get through one episode.

I absolutely consider it to be really cheesy but I enjoy cheesy things so it was right up my alley. As far as the acting goes, bro idk, if I enjoy a performance I can't really tell if it's 'bad' or 'good' acting y'know? So long as I buy the characters being real fake-people, and like watching them on-screen, that's what matters to me.

Also the special effects were... something, but they normally are in these kinds of C-Dramas and I consider it part of their charm.

Depends what you measure it against. I think it's not anywhere nearly as cheesy as a lot of other Chinese dramas, especially other historixal/Xianxia/Wuxia ones. The acting varies a lot depending on the actors and there are some cringey scenes but I am highly allergic to cringe and I thought it was manageable.

Ehhh... some of it is rough, especially in the beginning. I think it's part of the genre that some types of roles and characters have a very broad, unsophisticated approach. The villains aren't subtle, for example, so you can expect lots of villainous posturing, maniacal laughter, etc. The humor can be more on the physical slapstick side and the verbal humor may not translate well. It can feel slightly over the top, especially if you're not used to the drama.

IMO, The Untamed improves as it goes on, and the leads are great in their respective roles.

If your friend is someone like me, who doesn't usually watch Chinese dramas, they might be put off by the very different directing, acting, filming and editing style. I thought the acting was bad at first, too, but I stuck with it because I had heard so many good things and got used to it after a while. The exaggerated expressions, they way everyone just stands stock still while someone else is talking, how generally there is only one thing happening on screen at any given time, and how then the story becomes very sequential – yeah, if you're used to western film aesthetics, those look like very bad acting.

It's weird you say that because of late I have been fed up to the back teeth with American media. It's so boring. Like every American show I've seen recently just bores me to tears with its suffocating lack of deviation from bland characters, bland looking actors, and their completely introverted take on the world.

Chinese dramas interest me a lot more. Even though China itself makes me side eye hard, I enjoy Chinese dramas immensely because they're different.

Oh, I get you. I watched The Expanse recently and was struck by how American it was. The aesthetics, the stereotypical heroic outsiders, the stereotypical heroic sacrifice. Meh.

And like I said, the Chinese style isn't bad, just different. I completely get why you're starving for that kind of thing.

Yes! Exactly. I'm glad you get it because I literally know no one else who feels this way in RL.
