Looking for your favorite (and most reliable) vanilla Swiss roll cake recipe.

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2020-08-16 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
My sister wants a strawberry Swiss roll for her birthday. I have been looking around online and so far, the most highly rated one I can find is a Tasty one.

Does anyone have a recipe they would recommend? I am going to use strawberry jam and Swiss meringue buttercream for the filling.

I'm so sorry I don't. I just wanted to say that sounds fricking delicious.

I asked a friend who is good with recipe sites and they found these:
Vanilla Swiss Roll
Japanese style
They haven't tried making a swiss roll though so these are not 'favourites'.

This is also known as just roll cake, cake roll, jelly roll, cream roll, roulade, Swiss log, and Yule log (or bûche de Noël), so you can search for those too, if you'd like.

I find cake rolls pretty eggy (the amount of eggs helps make the sponge cake flexible enough to actually roll), so I've only ever made a couple, but I like a lot of Brown Eyed Baker's (https://www.browneyedbaker.com/) recipes. Here's one for Strawberries and Cream Angel Food Cake Roll (https://www.browneyedbaker.com/strawberries-and-cream-angel-food-cake- roll/). She also has some others recipes (https://www.browneyedbaker.com/search-results/?q=cake+roll).

You can also look on foodgawker, I would suggest here (https://foodgawker.com/?s=Swiss+roll+cake&cats_inc%5B0%5D=Desserts+%26+Sweets) and here (https://foodgawker.com/?s=roulade&cats_inc%5B0%5D=Desserts+%26+Sweets).

I need to get my hair cut super short for health reasons. (Wounds on my neck, ears and head that need to heal properly). Problem is, I am not pretty. At all. And my eyes which used to be a nice feature are not even now thanks to the stroke I have just had. (It's been a shit time.)

My options are super short pixie cut or a buzz cut. Which should I get?

Re: Advice or Recs

(Anonymous) 2020-08-16 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
That probably really depends on the shape of your face. So it might be easier to ask the person cutting your hair if they're a professional stylist.
For wound care, buzzcut might be lower maintenance but a pixie, even if short, can at least be styled to a certain extent. You could also start with a pixie and then still go shorter with the buzzcut if you don't like it.
If you end up hating it, maybe try looking into what types of hats would look good on you? I hope your wounds heal well and you can start with growing the hair out again soon!

AYRT Thank you for the advice anon. That makes a lot of sense.

Other fans of The Untamed - would you call it a cheesy show with bad acting? I didn't think it was at all that bad, but my friend who normally has similar taste to me could only get through one episode.

Re: Advice or Recs

(Anonymous) 2020-08-16 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I absolutely consider it to be really cheesy but I enjoy cheesy things so it was right up my alley. As far as the acting goes, bro idk, if I enjoy a performance I can't really tell if it's 'bad' or 'good' acting y'know? So long as I buy the characters being real fake-people, and like watching them on-screen, that's what matters to me.

Also the special effects were... something, but they normally are in these kinds of C-Dramas and I consider it part of their charm.

Depends what you measure it against. I think it's not anywhere nearly as cheesy as a lot of other Chinese dramas, especially other historixal/Xianxia/Wuxia ones. The acting varies a lot depending on the actors and there are some cringey scenes but I am highly allergic to cringe and I thought it was manageable.

Re: Advice or Recs

Ehhh... some of it is rough, especially in the beginning. I think it's part of the genre that some types of roles and characters have a very broad, unsophisticated approach. The villains aren't subtle, for example, so you can expect lots of villainous posturing, maniacal laughter, etc. The humor can be more on the physical slapstick side and the verbal humor may not translate well. It can feel slightly over the top, especially if you're not used to the drama.

IMO, The Untamed improves as it goes on, and the leads are great in their respective roles.

If your friend is someone like me, who doesn't usually watch Chinese dramas, they might be put off by the very different directing, acting, filming and editing style. I thought the acting was bad at first, too, but I stuck with it because I had heard so many good things and got used to it after a while. The exaggerated expressions, they way everyone just stands stock still while someone else is talking, how generally there is only one thing happening on screen at any given time, and how then the story becomes very sequential – yeah, if you're used to western film aesthetics, those look like very bad acting.

It's weird you say that because of late I have been fed up to the back teeth with American media. It's so boring. Like every American show I've seen recently just bores me to tears with its suffocating lack of deviation from bland characters, bland looking actors, and their completely introverted take on the world.

Chinese dramas interest me a lot more. Even though China itself makes me side eye hard, I enjoy Chinese dramas immensely because they're different.

Oh, I get you. I watched The Expanse recently and was struck by how American it was. The aesthetics, the stereotypical heroic outsiders, the stereotypical heroic sacrifice. Meh.

And like I said, the Chinese style isn't bad, just different. I completely get why you're starving for that kind of thing.

Final fantasy house question

(Anonymous) 2020-08-16 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
So one of my rare fan interactions at the moment has been with someone using the handle 'JenCornet'. But she seems super lovely and balanced. It's gotta be a coincidence right???

Re: Final fantasy house question

(Anonymous) 2020-08-17 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I have no idea about this, but on the off chance it's not a coincidence, maybe it was the person in question waiting for things to cool down enough (and some might argue more than enough time has gone by) before resurfacing?

But using that name just sounds like a dumb move to me, and it's likely the person I'm question didn't completely abandon the internet and likely has been on under other handles doing other things.

Looking for some specific MCU threesomes

[personal profile] philstar22 2020-08-16 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
So, I'm looking for Steve/Bucky/Sam, Steve/Bucky/Thor, Steve/Bucky/Peggy, and Steve/Bucky/Natasha fics. Preferrably smutty stuff, but I'll take anything. I'd also be happy with Steve/Bucky/Sam/Natasha as well.

I am trying to figure out a good soil mix for my raised beds based on what I can buy at Home Depot. I can't possibly justify the expensive $10/cubic foot organic stuff, but I would prefer an organic mix.

It's more expensive to buy bagged mix than a bulk load of soil, but I can move 1-2 cubic foot bags of soil easily myself. I don't have a wheelbarrow so if I ordered bulk dirt I'd probably have to buy one too.

Since tons of people have jumped on the backyard garden bandwagon, finding stuff that's in stock and doesn't suck is tricky, especially as I need about 7.5 cubic yards total.

Gardeners of FS, would a 50/50 mix of

https://www.homedepot.com/p/1-CF-Steer-Manure-Blend

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Kellogg-Garden-Organics-2-cu-ft-Raised-Bed-and-Potting-Mix-Premium-Outdoor-Container-Mix-687

work, or would that much nitrogen fry everything I planted? Would it help if I watered it in and let it sit for a month or so before planting? (It's too hot to start much without it frying and spring stuff like peas and lettuce goes in in mid-late September here.)

Anime Recs

(Anonymous) 2020-08-17 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Just finished Blade of the Immortal (tears bc it's over and I want more and the ending was a little bittersweet for me, but good none the less, like Edward Scissorhands), and I'm looking for something in a similar vein...

If you haven't seen that one, something akin to Dororo, or even Rage of Bahamut (certainly more light hearted than the other two) but essentially slow pacing, sword fighting/not necessarily contemporary, and there's a good plot/character growth. Romance isn't the focus (although I don't mind if that's in there as well). Bonus for ass kicking ladies.
