Ah, there’s someone in my fandom who does these sorts of things as well, but it’s a doll fandom, so instead of writing fic, it’s more that she comments stuff like, “Your doll’s character is x, so she would’ve been too poor to wear y”, and “Your dolls are wearing their foundation garments incorrectly”. She gives mini history lessons too (and flounces when other people say she’s wrong) and it all bugs the shit out of me.

She sounds like a delight. (Major sarcasm.) And so does the person OP is talking about...

IMO, the only time that sort of nitpicky shit is okay is if you've asked someone to beta for historical detail.

such lovely hanbok ahem

I do enjoy learning historical facts tangential to historical media I'm enjoying - you should see my list of bookmarks for Han China merely because of Dynasty Warriors - but yeah there's always insufferable people in every historical fandom who have to provide unsolicited crit about who's doing what wrong. it's one thing when it's a blog like Tyranny of Style nitpicking historical costuming, because you read them for that purpose and are there for that. It's quite another when the nitpicking blindsides you, especially if it's a, directed at you for something you swear you researched, and b, wrong.

Personally I love history, so the lessons are not an issue for me. I'm half and half on the 'right' way to write a story if were talking from a purely historical standpoint though. Like that attitude is endlessly annoying/irritating, and as always people should not be telling other people how to enjoy their media. Historically though, I'm a huge stickler for accuracy myself, and depending on what kind of history were talking about, like recent history and from your own culture I can let things pass, but when writing about an important historical event or from another culture, things can become very problematic very quickly.

Lecturing people about it is never cool, neither is acting all superior because of it. I do believe that in some instances there can be a 'wrong' way to interpret certain media. (Like how the people who say that playing Metal Gear inspired them to join the army are completely missing the point of the series) And while I'll silently judge them for it they do have the right to see things in such a way, even if I consider them fundamentally wrong.
Just my thoughts on the matter, sorry if I got a little OT for a while there, I was mainly thinking out loud.

anon above you coming back to go SAME SAME SAME

I love learning historical facts and nuances, and little language bits that I can't yet parse myself, but I'm far more willing to take historical education from someone who's gentle about it and approaches in the right context, rather than standing on a soapbox to preach their screed about how you just don't understand the true historical pretext of ninjutsu or something. I try to be accurate when I can but also am pretty liberal with disclaimers and apologies when I feel like I've got things mostly accurate but there may be some liberties taken because canon is weird or translations are bad or...idk it's just harder to really get everything right if you aren't literally from China.

Dear fandom friend,

Stop with the history lessons and the "my way is the best/only way to read this pairing." Write what you want. Like what you like. Stop trying to control the fandom.
