This is interesting to me because there actually was a class at my high school that was all YA and I really wanted to take it, but my guidance counselor said that class wasn’t for “college-bound people” and placed me in AP English instead. I’m still a little bitter about that because I could’ve taken both (I only needed four classes to graduate), but apparently colleges wouldn’t have liked it.

It varies a lot.

I was mad because our Caribbean lit class was a lower level than I was allowed to take if I wanted to go to university.

At our school, our current English teachers emphasize Indigenous and multicultural lit at all levels, which I'm wholeheartedly in favour of and challenges the kids to read outside of their comfort zone. The previous ones pretty much only did YA because they didn't want to pull teeth to get the kids to read a book.
