It varies a lot.

I was mad because our Caribbean lit class was a lower level than I was allowed to take if I wanted to go to university.

At our school, our current English teachers emphasize Indigenous and multicultural lit at all levels, which I'm wholeheartedly in favour of and challenges the kids to read outside of their comfort zone. The previous ones pretty much only did YA because they didn't want to pull teeth to get the kids to read a book.
