Your second suggestion is what I'm doing. There are two "celebrity" BFFs that I kind of ship, but one of them seems like a bit of a jerk TBH, although I really like their dynamic overall. The whole RPF thing weirds me out a bit, plus I'm not interested in trying to write the one guy's personality the way it comes across to me (several people who've worked with him have said he's a great guy and I have no *actual* evidence for him being a jerk, but the things he says just kind of rub me the wrong way sometimes).

Anyway, my solution is to just take the aspects of their dynamic that I really love and write original fic/OCs who have that sort of dynamic.
