To be honest I think a lot of people think like you, that's why some pairings are juggernaut pairings or some characters are super loved despite not being all that great (I'm being nice here). I can't do that. I may start reading or watching something because a popular character or something naturally catches my eye, but I rarely happen to actually end up liking the thing that got me interested in a piece of media.
