Leather Couch Buying Tips?

(Anonymous) 2020-08-21 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I’m looking at buying a leather couch. Probably a in a mid-century modern style. Does anybody have any advice? I feel like these big purchases are the kind of things where you basically have to buy it in order to find out what you’ll do differently when you buy your next one--which is a problem when it’s a $2000 item and you don’t want to have to buy another one for a very long time. :/

So! Fellow couch-buyers, do you have any experiential wisdom to share with me?

My mom bought a leather couch a year ago, and I don't know if this is an option for you, but maybe try to see it on the showroom floor so to speak?

We went to the store, sat in different ones, touched the different kinds of leather, etc. So probably not very helpful, but your best bet is to try to see the couch before hand. Make sure you get the measurements of the space you plan on using and of the couch itself as well, and how low you want it to dip, how sturdy, and the finish on the leather...

AYRT - Oh god, yeah, that's definitely something I've been trying to do. Unfortunately, as a Canadian, even a Canadian living in a major city, there's not a ton of styles I can go see. I've been to a couple of stores, but the models I'm most interested in haven't been there.

At least the stores have been able to give me swatches, though. It's amazing how much leather varies, piece to piece.

Thanks for the advice!

My friend had a leather couch when I was younger, so although my advice is based on experience it is limited.

First question is how hot are your summers? Second is are you the kind of person who likes to lie on the couch or would it be something you sit on daily for a bit?

If you like to lie on your couch and you get hot summers then I would look at something other than leather. The skin sticking to it sensation is horrible.

Summers here aren't that hot (sadly). And I mainly sit on my couch, not lay on it. So I think it'll be okay. Also, I kind of love that sensation? We had pleather car seats when I was a kid, and in the summer we'd always stick to them, which was how we knew it was a deliciously hot summer day.

I really liked a vinyl loveseat that I had, but I've never had a couch in leather. Do a have a leather recliner in an obnoxious color, but it is soft and comfortable and has lasted a long time.
