I have a sore neck and I've had it off and on for a couple of weeks. I probably need more sleep but I think it's also time to replace my pillow. What I have is too flat for side sleeping. I wonder if I'm clenching my jaw at night or something.

I stabbed myself in my own earlobe when taking out my earrings last night, it hurt like fuck, it bled, and it's been low-key aching most of the day while I've periodically checked in with it to make sure it doesn't get infected.

It should be fine as I'm the kind of idiot who's done this to myself before, but that type of pain always triggers a nausea response in me so that's been fun to deal with today. :/

Pretty good, all things considered. Bought myself some really cute seasonal patterned face masks; I've grown so used to face masks that I even wear them in the car now. Just find them strangely comfortable. Hmmm. Other than that, getting some writing done for Frankenstein/Igor inspired smut. Heh heh. Planning a very ~sexy~ Halloween this year. ;D

Was in 'Jury Selection' for 9 hours today. Wasn't selected, and thank gods, as the people who *were* were whisked off to the next town over (30 mins away) to start the trial.

The defense lawyer was a bit smarmy and, in my mind, sort of pushing his agenda with the questions he asked to 'weed out' jurors he didn't want/did want. The accused, a guy named Dale (rape, sodomy, theft, drug dealer, previously charged with domestic abuse) sat up at the table with his other lawyer and made little comments and faces.

It was bizarre, tedious, and uncomfortable, and my fellow humans are complete and utter idiots. Now i have a headache.

Meh. I'm ok but I'm worried about the fires here (NorCal). We had a crazy lightning storm a couple of days ago and it started fires everywhere, and resources are thin because of Covid (a lot of prison inmates fight the fires and Covid is ravaging Cali's prison population now). I just worry about every aspect of it.

I'm trying to distract myself though, for my own mental health, so I've been looking at fresh vegetables that are in season now, and trying new recipes with them. I bought a pound of fresh peas and cooked them with a little basil and butter, and they were the best peas I'd ever eaten. I bought another pound and will be making a salad with them, using butter lettuce and a dressing seasoned with fresh tarragon, parsley, and chervil (I've never used chervil before), with shaved ricotta salata (a cheese I've never eaten) on top. I'm serving this as a side dish for a pan fried duck breast sandwich, and a chilled sparkling rosé as the beverage. Petit fours (from the local Italian grocery deli, lol) for dessert. I think it will be a great meal, and a nice distraction from the fires.

I kinda accidentally wound up practicing korean a lot today and wondering if I'll wind up more fluent in Korean than in my literal first language: gàidhlig (scottish gaelic)
I am already waaaaay more fluent in English, I even tend to think in english when I think in words, and that's kinda sad tbh.

Got a new med from my neurologist that has ended the bad migraine. So now just have a sinus headache. I can live with that.

Still tired from lack of sleep and being sick for a week and taking all the meds. Going to bed early.

Also, since I haven't felt like listening to anything the past few days, I've spent way too much time on Reddit.

A little achey from a root canal a couple days ago. Spent the morning crying because of the world. Thought about sci-fi a little bit, now I'm watching a streamer and will switch to the DNC when it comes on. So like, mixed.

Not bad. Had a successful Zoom meeting in the morning, did some work in the afternoon, and now I'm just chilling. Also, I got my AC fixed, so I no longer have to shroud my house in darkness and take cold baths to cool off.

I had a meeting about the pre-apprenticeship classes I might be taking. I found out the physical tryout is going to be competitive because there's just not enough spots for the people who signed up and I'm freaking out a little bit about that. ;;

I'm meeting an old uni friend this afternoon - in like ten minutes, in fact - assuming she doesn't stand me up. I don't want to be too cynical, but she did stand me up the last time we made plans, so idk.
I'm really anxious... and overdressed. I let my anxiety guide my dressing decisions, and now I look like I'm going to the opera instead of a café 😓

Patterned Face Masks?

Out of curiosity, do any of you wear face masks with interesting patterns or do you just wear standard issued medical grade ones? I've been seeing more and more people donning festively colored ones as well as fandom-themed ones too. They're becoming increasingly a kind of fashion statement, even being coordinated with the rest of an outfit.

I have a 'NASA' one with little logos and spaceships and things, and a 'bookworm' one with books and a wee bookworms.

The ones i got from the Fire Department are half red, half black, as those are kind of the FD 'colors'.

I have a Black Lives Matter mask, a mask with Grateful Dead dancing bears on it and one with a reproduction of (I think) Ching dynasty art with old Chinese guys on it.

The masks I have access to are all patterned cloth ones (technically I'm sharing them with my mum but even before the pandemic getting her to leave the house was like pulling teeth). I hope that even in the best case scenario of we get a super effective vaccine wearing masks remains pretty socially acceptable because I'd like to get or make ones that fit my aesthetic and wear them.
A couple of the masks are a design my dad made for his team. Another couple have cats on them. The rest hurt my ears and are liable to pull themselves off my face.

I bought a Fiorrucci face mask! It's the white one with the angel print. There's a really flexible wire sewn inside the top seam so you can mold it over the bridge of your nose and under your eyes better, I love it! I also have a plain black one, I keep both in my bag and just grab whatevers on top.

I've been wearing bandana's for the past few months - since regular masks really irritated and caused acne around the back of my ears for some reason - and the majority of them I've had in a drawer from my emo phase as a teen so they were mostly black with various patterns/prints on them (smilie faces, skulls, dragons,etc). managed buy a few more for more variety in color just to change it up a bit as well as a couple of pride flag bandanas that are coming in the mail too :)

Leather Couch Buying Tips?

I’m looking at buying a leather couch. Probably a in a mid-century modern style. Does anybody have any advice? I feel like these big purchases are the kind of things where you basically have to buy it in order to find out what you’ll do differently when you buy your next one--which is a problem when it’s a $2000 item and you don’t want to have to buy another one for a very long time. :/

Please god don't fight I'm begging ya'll, save my sanity...

SO, THINGS I DIDN'T EXPECT TO WAKE UP TO TODAY.... LMAO

So like every person with a basic functioning moral compass when I saw the Netflix America promo poster for Cuties I was like... UHM, HELLO? WHAT IS THIS SHIT? Like, that was a major blunder to put it LIGHTLY, and I'm so fucking glad they fixed it because HOLY FUCKING YIKES, NO, JUST NO.

But god am I angry for a different reason now and that's people believing NETFLIX'S fuckup to be a fuckup of the film itself. I don't condemn anyone for initially thinking this, but I hope I can spread a little bit of correct information with this post to ya'll who may have seen this drama... But the film itself? Doesn't promote the sexualization of children. End of. I submitted a secret about this, so if this wording will eventually sound redundant, its because I'm OP of the secret that'll eventually be posted:

Please please please take a few minutes to look up and read reviews of the film from January when it premiered at Sundance film festival. Please but aside your kneejerk uncomfortable and horrified reaction to take in the words of the reviews... Cuties condemns the sexualization and adultification of young girls, especially girls of color, just in a way many people in the west, myself included, are not used to. This isn't the next Little Miss Sunshine. The movie shows you uncomfortable and hard to watch scenes because that is the point - it makes you uncomfortable so that it can drive its core message home with a sledgehammer: we as a society must pick up the slack where parents unfortunately so commonly fail and protect our youth from adults who would sexualize them before they even hit puberty. We must protect our youth so that they can safely be children.

Based on reviews alone as I have not seen the movie obviously, it's plain to me that Cuties bluntly confronts the issue of the sexualization of children, that it harshly criticizes one (albeit of many) cultures that are so repulsed by and rejecting of sex that it ends up pushing its children to sexualize themselves as an act of rebellion. The fact that people who haven't seen it can't take 20 minutes to actually look into it more deeply saddens me, because it sounds like it'll be a brave and disquieting movie that is worth watching if you're in the right state of mind to do so.

Obviously: your discomfort is valid. The movie is meant to discomfort you. Similarly, you are allowed to detach from it, to say it's not for you and not watch it. But please don't moralize and devalue a story told by a black woman about her culture just because you personally are uncomfortable: let's not go down that particular rabbit hole.

One last point: there is one other movie I've seen that tackles a serious issue in a bluntly horrifying manner. I unfortunately do not remember the title, but the movie tackles CSA by straight up depicting it graphically. I cried when watching it, I had to get up and walk away... in a way for me it was kind of therapeutic, because when it happened to me I couldn't get up and walk away, so I'm glad this movie, a harmless thing on a television screen, allowed me to do that, to take back that power. But it tackled the subject in a way we're just not used to seeing. It was uncomfortable, sickening, again horrifying... but that was the point. It did its job and told its story.

Anyway. Please stream Cuties (if you feel comfortable doing so) on Netflix on September 9th. Please give this black director your support; let her tell her story.

RIP Chi Chi DeVayne

I literally (as the winner was announced actually) just finished watching all stars season three when my dad comes down stairs and mentions that someone from the series died at 34. I loved Chi Chi with all my heart. Her story, growth, everything about her inspired me. My belief in her drove me forward when dealing with my own strugges, and I am so sorry to see her go.
She was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, she got sick... I'm going to miss her, but I wish her every kind of happiness wherever she is now. She deserves it.
