Patterned Face Masks?

(Anonymous) 2020-08-20 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Out of curiosity, do any of you wear face masks with interesting patterns or do you just wear standard issued medical grade ones? I've been seeing more and more people donning festively colored ones as well as fandom-themed ones too. They're becoming increasingly a kind of fashion statement, even being coordinated with the rest of an outfit.

I have a 'NASA' one with little logos and spaceships and things, and a 'bookworm' one with books and a wee bookworms.

The ones i got from the Fire Department are half red, half black, as those are kind of the FD 'colors'.

If you go here, you can see the tons and tons of patterned and fandom-specific cloth they have - SO MANY AWESOME THINGS!

Oh, cool, I want ones with My Little Ponies and Snoopy and Rocky Horror lips on them, those are awesome!
I also want the one with the Who on it!

Yes! I got my NASA and bookworm masks from them. They're super-comfortable and long-wearing. They don't come with any filter, but I researched a bit and found my own thing, which I inserted in between the layers (they have left an inner seam open for you to do this).

Oh wow, thanks for that link! I just spent twenty minutes looking at all the fabric choices and the prices seem very reasonable, too.

I have a Black Lives Matter mask, a mask with Grateful Dead dancing bears on it and one with a reproduction of (I think) Ching dynasty art with old Chinese guys on it.

The masks I have access to are all patterned cloth ones (technically I'm sharing them with my mum but even before the pandemic getting her to leave the house was like pulling teeth). I hope that even in the best case scenario of we get a super effective vaccine wearing masks remains pretty socially acceptable because I'd like to get or make ones that fit my aesthetic and wear them.
A couple of the masks are a design my dad made for his team. Another couple have cats on them. The rest hurt my ears and are liable to pull themselves off my face.

I bought a Fiorrucci face mask! It's the white one with the angel print. There's a really flexible wire sewn inside the top seam so you can mold it over the bridge of your nose and under your eyes better, I love it! I also have a plain black one, I keep both in my bag and just grab whatevers on top.

I've been wearing bandana's for the past few months - since regular masks really irritated and caused acne around the back of my ears for some reason - and the majority of them I've had in a drawer from my emo phase as a teen so they were mostly black with various patterns/prints on them (smilie faces, skulls, dragons, etc). managed buy a few more for more variety in color just to change it up a bit as well as a couple of pride flag bandanas that are coming in the mail too :)

Are those thick bandanas? If not do you layer up? If they're too thin a couple layers could make a life saving difference

I have some plain black double-layer cotton ones I got a couple of months ago. And I thought I should get some more cotton masks a few weeks ago and when I went looking, they had double-layer cotton masks with patterns for less, so I got a set, but I chose one of the more understated sets - denim, black-and-white check, and a green fern leaf pattern.

FASHION ALL THE WAY I mean I'm a cosplayer and have shitloads of pretty cotton prints laying around my house, why wouldn't I have nice ones?

I have a gorgeous red sakura print made from actual Japanese cotton, a pirate skull one, and a dragon one. My roommate has another Japanese cotton but it's cute as shit, it's tiny bunnies and flower petals.

I've still got something like 30 nerdy/fandom ones packaged and prepared and now that everyone is capable of going to Joann's to get fabric to make their own, no one wants them, so if anybody needs any and doesn't want to/can't sew, hit me up and I'll give you my info.

The first one I got was sent by my sister in law and it was flamingo patterned, also have the disposable ones. Then I ordered an opposum one from the Me, Pearl youtube channel but...although it's cute and I'm happy to support the youtuber, it's not that great as a mask (light satiny material, slips off the nose constantly). Then I got some assorted printed ones from Old Navy and I like those a lot tbh, both the look and the mask itself. May get more. They don't match my outfits at all though lol.

A lot of people around me are wearing ones with a local logo on them that they're selling at the grocery store.

I like my patterned masks more than the surgical masks. My best friend made me some flower print masks from the fabric in her fabric stash. They're nice and thick and look pretty cute. I have masks with band logos and one with a kitty cat face too.

I've only been wearing ones I made because at first you couldn't buy them and then it became habit. I've just been working with fabric I happen to have. I made one in a Hawaiian print and that's the most "fun" one (I don't own any particularly goofy fabric). I'm working on another one from the same remnant.

I use the medical blue/white ones, but I do have a few with patterns. I wanna get some more fashion oriented ones tho, ngl

I had some Disney Beauty and the Beast cotton fabric with the stained glass pattern from the film intro laying around and made a pleated mask out of that, a layer of old tshirt, a layer of cotton sheet, and a lining cut from a silk dress, with ear loops made from bias tape that turned out a bit too long. I wore that and a few of the ones my boss made when we first had to go back to work, after the mask mandate kicked in. Hers were more neatly sewn but very plain; she made tons, enough for all our coworkers to have at least three.

I bought some plain cotton flannel for interlining/as a filter, lots of different colors of parachute cord, and a bunch of fat quarters of fun prints from spoonflower, and have made three more masks with them and two more from the BatB fabric for myself, and one for a coworker, using silk scraps scavenged from old clothes for lining. I used a free two-piece pattern because they feel lighter to wear than the pleated ones, and go together faster, at least for me.

This week my second order of flannel for interlining and a bunch of thin silk habotai in different colors for lining came in, so I'll be making more masks for friends, relatives, coworkers, and myself.

I just attached a scarf to a medical-grade one, so I can wrap it around my face like a Highwayman and feel Mysterious. (As well as socially responsible.)

I have a mask that has a little dog with a #1 bow on it. I bought it specifically for dog walking and since I've just worked out my two week notice, I'm kind of tempted to buy a new one, haha.

Mostly I wear white cloth ones that my mother bought.

I wear ones from stablercake! They're of fantastic quality, and I adore the designs. Big toothy furry smiles! (I rock the sunset tiger more often than not.)

I used to wear whatever bandit mask I had and still wear them overtop whatever masks I've been able to come across as they became available. I inherited a number of silk ones from my nana after she passed away, and as we've both had a love for animal print I've been wearing them interchangeably as to which suits my outfit best.
My favourite is a golden coloured snake-skin print! I feel like I'm about to rob a bank every time I wear it and I love it! <33
I really want a skull-face mask, but they're really hard to come across I find!

My mom's been experimenting with making masks of her own, and while she's an excellent seamstress I'm kinda having to shove certain materials at her so that the masks actually work rather than just wearing something on their face just for effect.
There's this fabric with an elephant on it we're going to try to make! I love it and I hope it'll turn out the way we expect~!

I use my lab's medical grade disposable masks but I would *love* a reusable-washable mask fashioned aftr Hannibal Lecter's muzzle.

The most elaborate mask I have is from Alabama Chanin. I bought it for my mom before their prices had to go up. She didn't care for the sand color, so she gave it to me. Size medium with elastic fits perfectly.

When the weather was colder, I was doing the t-shirt ninja trick.

I've been looking at some twostringjane (Etsy shop) masks. Wide variety of colors, and lots of tie dye.
