If you don't want to leave it as drawerfic, perhaps you can find a way to work it into one of the remix challenges, or at least tag it as a remix?

If the fic is abandoned and incomplete, I'd say it's fair game.

And even if it's not, it sounds like your version swerves far enough away from theirs that it wouldn't count as plagiaristic anyway. Different writers explore the same tropes/plots/stories all the time (see Coffee Shop AU #643,673) and it's only a problem when they start copying other fic verbatim and passing it off as their own. Which... given that you didn't even like the original fic in the first place, doesn't sound like something you're looking to do anyway.

Go forth and post, OP!

I second this. Go for it!

(Anonymous) 2020-08-22 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
That is difficult OP. How much of a carbon copy is it in regards to plot?

Sounds like you got inspired by an idea and your story took off, OP. Since you said you barely read one page, and the writing was not good, there's no plagiarizem here. I mean - there are a million 'forced to sleep in the same bed because reasons' meet cute type fics - nobody worries about the same *idea*, just identical words and scenes.

So go for it!

Meh, chances are it's so divorced from the torture porn fic, people might not notice the similarities anyway. If you're worried, maybe change a few more details that either don't matter or would still allow the fic to follow the same storyline and have the same feel.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-22 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, I'd say go for it. At this point it's more "broadly inspired by" than ripping off in any real way.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-22 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
No. You'd be writing fix-it fic for another fic, and anyone calling that immoral should take a moment to think about what kind of literature we are talking about, here.

You might want to post it anon or with a sock account, though.

You could say in your fic's notes that you were inspired by said fic and either link it or refer to the title/author. I've seen plenty of fics do that.

+1

I would make sure I post a link to the fic that inspired it, saying I was inspired and wanted to do a different take with the same theme/plot.

Idk if you should write a message to the author -- hey, I was inspired by your fic, and started writing this. I linked your fic in mine, just so you know!

(It's not asking for permission, but I think it's courteous and saves you the trouble of someone writing to the author like "someone has plagiarised you".) Personally, I would like to think I'd be flattered.Akso, consider the remix option posted above.Sock account too, if you're really concerned.

If it's abandoned then technically it's all fair game. Hell, even if it wasn't I'd say do it anyway. It's really just an idea you're spinning off, it sounds like you're changing it fairly significantly too so there really shouldn't be any issue at all.
Being inspired by a premise and putting your own spin on it isn't shitty at all, definitely not plagiarism either.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-23 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Writing another fic on the same premise is not plagiarism. Hell, if you avoid presenting it as "X fic but done right" the author of the other fic might well love your take on it.

I say go for it. it's not like you're stealing their fic word for word. by virtue of writing the characters in character, it sounds like your fic and theirs will be worlds apart.

Just post it. It’s fandom, they can’t sue. For the few That notice just make a couple of tweaks.
