You could say in your fic's notes that you were inspired by said fic and either link it or refer to the title/author. I've seen plenty of fics do that.

I would make sure I post a link to the fic that inspired it, saying I was inspired and wanted to do a different take with the same theme/plot.

Idk if you should write a message to the author -- hey, I was inspired by your fic, and started writing this. I linked your fic in mine, just so you know!

(It's not asking for permission, but I think it's courteous and saves you the trouble of someone writing to the author like "someone has plagiarised you".) Personally, I would like to think I'd be flattered.Akso, consider the remix option posted above.Sock account too, if you're really concerned.
